Swimmers 2005

Set in a small waterfront town along coastal Maryland, Swimmers follows Emma Tyler, Tara Devon Gallagher, a fiercely intelligent and perceptive 11-year-old who starts the summer as a standout swimmer. In a vivid opening scene, she wears a red/navy one-piece swimsuit, a navy TCY swim cap, and goggles, dives from the starting block, and swims freestyle, only to confront an ear problem that will require surgery the family can ill afford. Emma’s father, Will Tyler, Robert Knott, drinks heavily and lives hand to mouth as a waterman, while her mother, Julia Tyler, Cherry Jones, has grown worn down trying to hold a fragile household together on meager funds and quietly suspects Will is having an affair.

Grounded from her favorite pastime, Emma searches for new ways to pass the long summer days. When she finds no one willing to talk to her, she forms a bond with Merrill, Sarah Paulson, a troubled woman who has returned to town to confront her past. The friendship becomes a fragile shelter for Emma, who often feels invisible at home, while Merrill discovers in Emma a chance to reconnect with something she has lost. A budding romance also starts to glow between Merrill and Clyde Tyler, Shawn Hatosy, one of Emma’s older brothers, though Merrill’s difficult past and need to be used threaten to undermine this fragile purity.

Amid the household turmoil, Will and Julia love their daughter deeply but are battered by finances: a lean fishing season, the sudden loss of Will’s boat, and Will’s stubborn pride in not asking for help. In the backdrop of these troubles, Mike Tyler, Michael Mosley, also contributes to the family dynamics as they navigate changing tides and mounting pressures.
