Suzzanna: Buried Alive 2018

In 1989, Satria, the director of a cable-manufacturing factory, and his wife Suzzanna eagerly await the arrival of their first child. At work, Satria rejects the demand for wage increases from two of his employees, Umar Teuku Rifnu Wikana and Jonal Verdi Solaiman. Soon after, he leaves on a business trip, and Umar and Jonal, alongside two other coworkers, Dudun Alex Abbad and Gino Kiki Narendra, hatch a plan to break into Satria’s house.

During the burglary, Suzzanna returns home and is caught in a confrontation. She is unmasked and badly wounded, impaled on a sharp bamboo pole. Believing she is dead, the culprits begin to bury her. When she actually wakes, they decide to bury her alive anyway, hoping to avoid punishment for their crime. Suzzanna survives but discovers a terrifying transformation: she has become a sundel bolong, a restless spirit bound to the living world.

Back at the house, Suzzanna’s presence remains, though Satria is unaware of her change. As the family life unfolds, the atmosphere grows tense and eerie. Suzzanna’s awakening leads her to watch over her killers as she grapples with sorrow and rage, and the house’s daily routines continue around the haunting presence that now calls the home its own. The servants eventually sense something otherworldly in the house, and Suzzanna allows them to depart, choosing not to reveal her new nature to everyone at first.

The killer trio, now under the shadow of guilt, becomes the target of Suzzanna’s newfound emphasis on vengeance. She begins stalking them one by one: she lures Dudun from his dormitory to the factory and decapitates him, a stark demonstration that her bond with the living world has shifted from fear to retribution. Umar, Jonal, and Gino, desperate to end what they started, seek guidance from Mbah Turu, a witch doctor and Gino’s uncle. Mbah Turu explains that a sundel bolong cannot directly kill humans in a straightforward way, but it can push others to harm themselves or each other. The plan to escape punishment takes a darker turn as Suzzanna haunts Jonal, and he stabs her—only to realize he has killed Gino by mistake.

In response, Umar, Jonal, and Turu craft a more elaborate scheme: they aim to trap and exorcise Suzzanna by destroying her home and killing Satria, whom they view as the true anchor binding Suzzanna to Earth. Rumors and fear spread through the village as Satria grows suspicious of his wife’s odd reactions, especially when he reads from the Quran and senses something is terribly wrong. The truth comes to light when he unearths Suzzanna’s body, confirming his worst fears.

Umar and Jonal lead a mob to Satria’s house and burn it to the ground. They dull Suzzanna’s power by driving a kris into her head, and they convince Satria that Suzzanna has been possessed by a demon, setting up what they claim is a final exorcism. But the conspirators’ plan unravels as Satria uncovers their identities and frees his wife from their manipulation. Suzzanna’s resilience and fury push her toward a final act that exposes the truth behind the haunting.

With Umar and Turu on the run, Satria confronts his assailants in a climactic struggle. In the conflict, Satria defeats Umar but is fatally wounded himself. Suzzanna, empowered by her own supernatural force, causes Turu to impale himself on a pointed tree branch and then buries Jonal alive. By taking a direct life, Suzzanna severs her ties to the earthly realm, and she dies in Satria’s arms. The tragedy closes on a quiet, solemn note as Satria, grievously wounded, joins his wife in the afterlife, completing a haunting arc of love, guilt, and revenge.
