Ravishankar [Jayaram] is an unsuccessful investor who lives with his best friend, Dennis, a wealthy rancher running a thriving dairy business on a sprawling valley farm called Bethlehem. Ravishankar is a jovial, lighthearted fellow who has built tall tales of his supposed success to impress his parents, grandparents, and extended family. The pair share a comfortable, easy camaraderie, even as Ravishankar’s stories hide the truth of his financial struggles and shaky reputation. On a vacation, the family’s routine turns chaotic when Ravishankar’s grandfather and grandmother return with a larger clan to spend a few days at the farmhouse, setting the stage for a blend of comedy, secrecy, and sentiment. Colonel C.R. Menon [Janardhanan] arrives as the patriarch of the visiting group, bringing with him a sense of stern tradition and the possibility of arranged futures, while Ravishankar’s grandmother Sukumari [Sukumari] lends warmth and a touch of old-world wisdom to the proceedings.

What unfolds is a comedy of pretenses that quickly spirals into something more complex. Ravishankar manages to convince the family that he is the actual owner of Bethlehem and that Dennis is merely his business partner. Abhirami reveals that her devotion is directed toward Niranjan, who is awaiting a death sentence in the near future. Her resolution is stark: she will not marry anyone but Niranjan, even if that means choosing a future that is fraught with danger and moral conflict. Niranjan’s presence—though far from Bethlehem’s routines—casts a somber shadow over the family’s festive mood. When Abhirami eventually confronts the reality of Niranjan’s arrest and the gravity of his crimes, she confronts a path that diverges sharply from the comfortable dreams of Bethlehem’s guests.

The family’s practical pressures mount as the day of the planned engagement approaches. Ravishankar, pressed by his relatives, pushes for a conventional arrangement: Abhirami should marry Dennis, a solution that would restore harmony and legitimacy to Bethlehem’s “founding story.” Yet Abhirami’s vow to Niranjan complicates the plan, and the household is thrust into a moral dilemma about love, loyalty, and the consequences of deception. In a pivotal moment, Niranjan, now transformed after years of violence, speaks with Abhirami and urges her to forget him and embrace Dennis.
