From Jacksonville, Florida, meteorologist Leah Kaplan Daryl Hannah leads a National Storm Center team aboard a Hurricane Hunters flight to study Hurricane Josephine as it forms over the Atlantic. Alongside her are technician Tommy Cramer Terry Chen and meteorologist Steve Pastor Sean Bell, with reporter Ryan Stewart Dylan Neal tagging along to craft a feature about the dangerous work of the hurricane hunters. Leah worries that Steve, recently furloughed because of a drinking problem, could be unreliable, and Ryan’s constant questions about the mission and Leah’s past only add to the tension in the cabin.

Leah reports back to her supervisor Eli Harder William MacDonald, who is involved in a larger plan to evacuate Corpus Christi, Texas, prompted by NSC Director James McCaffee Mackenzie Gray. The team monitors data from dropsondes as Flight 263 enters the hurricane’s outer wall at 1,500 ft, where winds and turbulence peak. The data show Josephine is strengthening, but the director’s response is slow; he is concerned that Leah’s traumatic past—losing her parents in Hurricane Edna—might cloud her judgment, a matter Dr. Johnson Gwynyth Walsh has been examining.

Inside the plane, the violent flight disrupts the crew; during a jolt, Steve is hurled into his control console and dies of a heart attack. For a brief moment, Leah, Ryan, and Tommy manage to steady themselves in the eye of the storm and try to alert headquarters that Josephine is veering toward Jacksonville. Relaying the distress and the data about the shifting path from the outer wall does not prompt an immediate change to evacuation, leaving the team to improvise as conditions worsen.

With the hurricane intensifying, Captain Henry Gersh Barclay Hope and co-pilot Ben Tillner Chad Cole struggle to keep Flight 263 under control as a fire erupts in one engine and sparking electrical systems blind the cockpit. Leah is hurled into the ceiling as the aircraft teeters in a parabolic maneuver, the rear exit door torn off and depressurization ripping through the cabin. Caught in the cargo netting, Leah survives but is badly hurt. Ryan acts quickly to haul Leah back inside, and the two crawl their way toward the cockpit to help Ben steer the crippled aircraft to safety. With Henry blinded by the sparking equipment, Leah convinces Ryan that they must work together to guide the plane home.

Receiving Flight 263’s mayday, the ground team hammers out a plan as Eli pushes to acknowledge the rising danger. Ben and Ryan manage to bring the aircraft down safely at Jacksonville, where emergency crews rush to tend to the wounded as Henry and Leah are carried to safety. In the end, the remaining crew members learn that their loved ones are safe, and the mission—though perilous—reaches a narrowly successful close, underscoring the grit and teamwork that define the hurricane hunters’ urgent work.
