Captain Jean-Luc Picard experiences a haunting nightmare, revisiting his terrifying assimilation by the cybernetic Borg six years prior, a traumatic event depicted in the two-part episode “The Best of Both Worlds.” Shortly after awakening, Starfleet alerts him of an impending Borg attack on Earth but instructs the USS Enterprise-E to remain patrolling the Romulan Neutral Zone, wary of stirring an “unstable element” into the conflict.
As the battle at Earth escalates and Starfleet finds itself outmatched, the crew of the Enterprise decides to defy orders and rush to save their home planet. They arrive just in time to assist the USS Defiant, helmed by Lieutenant Commander Worf, in its desperate struggle against a damaged Borg Cube. After sensing Borg communications within his mind, Picard makes the bold choice to focus the fleet’s firepower on an apparently unimportant section of the Cube, successfully destroying it as it launches a smaller sphere toward Earth.
The chase quickly leads the Enterprise into a temporal vortex where they catch a fleeting glimpse of an Earth entirely overrun by the Borg. It dawns on Picard that the Borg are exploiting time travel to alter history. The Enterprise finds itself transported back to April 4, 2063—the day before humanity’s monumental first contact with extraterrestrial life, as Zefram Cochrane pioneers his groundbreaking warp drive flight.
As the Borg sphere attacks, the Enterprise team realizes the Borg’s intent to thwart this first contact. They destroy the sphere and dispatch an away team to the Montana site where Cochrane is constructing the Phoenix, hoping to find survivors. Picard sends Cochrane’s assistant, Lily Sloane, back to the Enterprise for medical treatment and leaves Commander William Riker on Earth to ensure Cochrane’s flight occurs as scheduled. The crew idolizes Cochrane as a legendary figure, but the real man hesitates to embrace his pivotal historical role.
Meanwhile, Borg remnants infiltrate the Enterprise, seeking to assimilate its crew and modify the ship for their purposes. In a race against time, Picard leads a team toward engineering to deploy corrosive coolant against the Borg. However, the android Data is captured and finds himself face-to-face with the Borg Queen, who attempts to win his trust by grafting human skin onto him. While Sloane grapples with fear, she forms a bond with Picard, and they cleverly escape the Borg-infested zone of the ship by using the Holodeck as a diversion.
As Worf and the ship’s navigator, Lieutenant Hawk, work to thwart the Borg’s signal for reinforcements using the deflector dish, Hawk is assimilated, increasing the urgency of their mission. With assimilation rampant, Worf suggests destroying the ship to contain the threat, but Picard rebukes him in anger, fueled by a desire for vengeance. After a moment of reflection, Sloane helps Picard see that he’s losing his rationality to this thirst for revenge. Regretful, Picard reconciles with Worf and initiates the self-destruct sequence.
With the crew evacuating via escape pods, Picard determines to remain behind to rescue Data. Back on the Phoenix, Cochrane, Riker, and engineer Geordi La Forge gear up to engage the warp drive, while Picard confronts the Borg Queen, discovering her cunning plan involving Data. With human skin grafted to improve his sensory perception, she hopes to extract crucial encryption codes from him. Despite Picard’s offer to replace Data, the android stands firm, refusing to leave his captain behind. In a desperate act, Data sabotages the Borg Queen’s plans by rupturing a coolant tank, releasing corrosive gas that destroys the Borg’s organic components. Cochrane successfully completes his warp flight, and by April 5, 2063, the crew witnesses Vulcans landing to meet him, marking a critical moment in history. After mending the timeline, the Enterprise crew returns to the 24th century, relieved yet forever changed by their harrowing journey.
