Donalda Laloge Karine Vanasse is forced to marry the village miser and mayor, Séraphin Poudrier Pierre Lebeau, leaving behind the man she truly loves, Alexis Labranche Roy Dupuis(/actor/roy-dupuis). Set in a small Quebec community at the end of the 19th century, the story follows Donalda’s unhappy life with Séraphin, whose stingy habits shape every aspect of her daily existence. He refuses to father children and imposes severe rationing of meals, turning their home into a cold, controlled space.

Donalda grows increasingly fragile, and a pneumonia-like illness takes hold. In the meantime, Alexis returns from the lumber camps, unaware at first of the arrangement that has bound Donalda to another man. When he learns what’s happened, his arrival stirs tension among the villagers, who watch a love triangle play out under the weight of poverty and social expectation. Donalda’s health deteriorates, and she dies shortly after Alexis reaches her side.

During Donalda’s funeral, Séraphin’s house goes up in flames. Panicked by the loss of both wealth and prestige, he attempts to rescue his fortune by risking his life in the blaze. Alexis pulls him from the burning house, and the crowd discovers that Séraphin’s hands are tightly clenched around coins.
