In the dusty, sun-scorched expanse of the Wild West during the early 1900s, the captivating Milagro Navarro-Prescott showcased her impressive skills as she rode a magnificent horse for a traveling circus. Fast forward a few years, and her spirited young daughter, Fortuna “Lucky” Esperanza Navarro-Prescott, is left to navigate life without her mother’s wise guidance. Living with her aunt Cora Prescott and grandfather James in a bustling eastern city, Lucky grapples with a sense of longing and disconnection from her roots.

As time unfolds, Lucky’s restlessness grows stronger, fueling her desire for adventure outside the confines of urban life. When her impulsive decision to let a curious squirrel into their home disrupts a campaign party hosted by her grandfather, Lucky and Cora make a pivotal choice to travel west to Miradero for the summer. This marks a journey to reunite with her father, Jim Prescott, a figure she hardly knows following her mother’s tragic passing. The train ride towards their destination becomes a transformative moment, especially when Lucky locks eyes with a wild mustang galloping with its herd—her instinct compelling her to pursue this creature.

Upon their arrival in Miradero, Lucky and Cora meet enthusiastic young riders: Pru Granger, along with her father Al, and Abigail Stone with her brother Snips. As Lucky immerses herself in the vibrant surroundings, her curiosity guides her to a local corral, where she encounters the same mustang that had piqued her interest before. Unfortunately, she learns that this magnificent creature is undergoing harsh training at the hands of the gruff Hendricks, leaving Lucky feeling powerless and torn about the horse’s well-being.

Despite her father’s apprehensions regarding the potential dangers of horses, Lucky musters the courage to share her experience with Jim and Cora, hoping to devise a plan to rescue the tormented horse. The trio faces countless challenges, racing towards Heck Mountain, the water depot designated for unloading the captured herd.

Arriving just in time, they discover that Hendricks’ gang has arrived earlier than expected. Despite the disheartening reality that Spirit’s herd is in peril, Lucky and her friends devise a daring rescue operation, tracking down the train that carries Spirit’s family toward an uncertain fate. With Spirit leading the way, they infiltrate the transport vessel, liberating the other horses and successfully overcoming the thugs.

As Hendricks finds himself hurled overboard thanks to Spirit’s determined efforts, Jim, Cora, and Al arrive, having pursued the villainous group with their steadfast steam engine.
