In a captivating prologue set against the backdrop of a lush forest, we meet Lord Fergus and Lady Elinor, who are joyfully celebrating the birthday of their spirited young daughter, Merida. The atmosphere is filled with laughter as Elinor shares playful moments with Merida, but a hint of unease creeps in when Fergus gifts the little girl her very own bow and a set of arrows, igniting a spark of adventure in the young archer. After trying her hand at shooting, one of Merida’s arrows veers off course into the depths of the forest. Curiosity propels her to retrieve the errant arrow, where she encounters a glowing blue will-o’-the-wisp. Upon sharing her enchanting experience with her parents, her mother explains that these mystical beings are known to guide individuals toward their destinies.

The enchanting atmosphere is abruptly shattered when a massive black bear crashes the celebration. Panic ensues as Merida and her mother frantically flee while Lord Fergus courageously attempts to fend off the aggressive beast.

As the story unfolds, we discover that time has passed—Lord Fergus, now with a leg lost to that very bear, has been joined by three mischievous young boys, the triplet brothers of Merida, who add wholesome chaos to the family dynamic. Meanwhile, Merida has blossomed into a determined teenager and, unlike her mother’s wishes to mold her into a proper lady, she is fixated on honing her archery skills and exploring the vast wilderness.

One fateful evening, a messenger arrives with troubling news: the three neighboring clans have expressed their willingness to fight for Merida’s hand in marriage. This traditional arrangement stirs a whirlwind of frustration within Merida, as her mother passionately explains the necessity of maintaining peace among the clans. She recounts the tale of their ancestral lineage, describing how the clans descended from four brothers, whose greed for power led to a catastrophic imbalance. However, such stories do little to soothe Merida’s rebellious spirit against the impending betrothal.

Soon enough, the three clans—represented by Lords MacGuffin, Macintosh, and Dingwall—arrive, each bringing their respective sons to compete for Merida’s heart. In a twist of fate, tradition dictates that the first-borns compete, which spurs an idea in Merida’s determined mind. She confidently proposes an archery contest, igniting the interest of a skeptical crowd. To everyone’s astonishment, while most sons struggle with the sport, Merida boldly steps forward, declaring that as a first-born, she will fight for her own hand. Despite her mother’s protests, Merida becomes a force to be reckoned with, hitting bulls-eyes on each target and shocking everyone present.

The confrontation ignites tensions between mother and daughter, leading to a heated argument filled with hurtful words. In a moment of passionate defiance, Merida tears a tapestry depicting their family, creating a symbolic rift between herself and her mother. Incensed, Elinor impulsively tosses Merida’s bow into the fireplace, igniting Merida’s fury and prompting her to storm out of the castle. Moments later, Elinor, filled with regret, attempts to retrieve the charred bow from the flames.

Merida, seeking solace, retreats into the wild, where she stumbles upon a mystical circle of stones surrounded by will-o’-the-wisps that lead her to a quaint cottage inhabited by a mysterious old woman. Though initially claiming to be merely a wood carver, the woman reveals herself as a witch, evident from her enchanted broom and talking crow. Desperate for a spell to change her mother, Merida finds a way to convince the witch to help her after offering to buy all her wood carvings. The witch reluctantly agrees and brews a potion that transforms into a small pie, which Merida is instructed to give to Elinor.

Returning to the castle, the air thick with tension as King Fergus tries to calm the lords post-tournament, Merida excitedly presents the pie to her mother. However, the joy quickly transforms into horror when, after just one bite, Elinor falls ill and unexpectedly transforms into a black bear!

Realizing that King Fergus would undoubtedly harm her mother in this form, Merida quickly devises a plan. With the help of her triplet brothers, she skillfully distracts her father and the lords, allowing her to whisk Elinor away into the protection of the forest. The duo searches for the witch’s hut, only to find it abandoned. The message left behind informs Merida that the witch has departed and that the spell cast upon her mother will become irreversible within two sunrises. If they wish to break it, they must heed the instructions regarding “mending.”

The stakes escalate as the mother and daughter journey through the forest, and when Merida inadvertently causes danger during their encounters with wild creatures, they must navigate their bond and challenges together. With time slipping away, they encounter the will-o’-the-wisps once more, which lead them to the remnants of a grand castle. Here, Merida discovers a stone tablet depicting four brothers, one of whom is cursed due to his desire for power. This storyline intertwines with Elinor’s predicament, linking her fate to the ancient curse.

As menacing shadows of the past emerge, and a fearsome bear charges at Merida, it’s Elinor—the bear—who instinctively protects her daughter. With a renewed sense of urgency, Merida conveys the divine message of mending. Believing that repairing the tapestry she had torn could be the key to saving her mother, she races back to the castle, determined to restore their bond and break the witch’s spell before time runs out.
