In a brave act to protect him, she sends Sonic to Earth while confronting the Echidnas, reminding him that world wants to harness his abilities and urging him to stay concealed for his safety.

A decade later, Sonic has adapted to life in the idyllic Green Hills, Montana, yet feels an overwhelming sense of loneliness as he secretly observes the world around him. He admires the local sheriff, Tom Wachowski, who has a kind heart for animals, and secretly nicknames him “Donut Lord.” Tom’s aspirations to join the SFPD are juxtaposed against Sonic’s whimsical endeavors, which include clocking speeds of 296 mph while trying to best his records.

Inside a cave decorated with discarded treasures, Sonic dreams of a different life—one that doesn’t involve a planet filled with foul-smelling mushrooms. His solitude stings deeply, especially after an exhilarating night of baseball leads him to inadvertently unleash an electromagnetic pulse that disrupts power across the entire Pacific Northwest. This event draws the attention of the wily Doctor Robotnik, a brilliant yet deranged roboticist seeking to exploit Sonic’s speed for global domination. The U.S. Department of Defense commissions Robotnik to investigate this outage, showcasing his formidable talent with drones.

While Robotnik gets closer to discovering Sonic’s presence, the blue hedgehog ends up in a bind after being tranquilized by Tom Wachowski in a moment of confusion, causing his precious bag of rings to portal to the Transamerica Pyramid. Now, Sonic and Tom embark on an unexpected road trip to retrieve the rings, unraveling their friendship along the way as well as Sonic’s desire for companionship, showcased in his heartfelt bucket list—filled with dreams of adventure that had once seemed unreachable.

As Tom and Sonic evade Robotnik’s relentless pursuit, they navigate their differences in aspirations and fears. Tom reveals that he and his veterinarian wife, Maddie, are contemplating a move to San Francisco, a decision that Sonic desperately disapproves of. Sonic reflects on the importance of standing by those who matter most, a lesson that resonates throughout their journey.

Upon reaching San Francisco, Sonic, supported by Maddie, finds new gear and experiences adversity from Robotnik, who has become enthralled with harnessing Sonic’s power through his quills. A climactic battle ensues, culminating in an exhilarating chase based on speed, where Sonic taps into his inner strength aided by Tom’s bravery.

Ultimately, after a victory that banishes Robotnik to another world, Tom and Maddie opt to settle in Green Hills, allowing Sonic to join their newfound family. Meanwhile, the government erases Robotnik’s existence from public records, only for a disturbed Robotnik to begin plotting vengeance in the shadows. The serenity is short-lived, as Tails, a clever two-tailed fox from Sonic’s distant world, emerges through a portal, destined to find and support his new friend.
