From Glasgow to London, Gavin Bellini is a Glaswegian artist who left home to chase a dream of illustrating children’s books. Seven years on, success has eluded him, and he ekes out a living on the edge of poverty with a friend who is too kind to press for rent. His family back in Glasgow were ice-cream makers who had a factory there and have recently sold it, as his father battles ill health.
One day, Uncle Salvatore(/actor/richard-wilson), the head of the Bellini clan, happens to be in London for the Ice Cream awards and happens upon Gavin in an Italian restaurant. He sits Gavin down and delivers a hard ultimatum: he must be in Glasgow in two days’ time at 7:30 pm sharp for his father’s 60th birthday party. The stakes are clear—the recent sale of the factory has yielded profits to be shared among the siblings, and if Gavin doesn’t show up, he will not receive his share. Salvatore slides him £30 to cover petrol and sets him on the road.
With only that modest cash in hand, Gavin climbs behind the wheel of his 1971 Triumph Herald, a car earned from the country-and-western group for doing graphics for their album. It’s a long, dusty journey from London to the north, and the road begins to test him in small, stubborn ways. Along the way, he picks up a mysterious hitchhiker, Yvonne(/actor/elaine-collins), whose own secrets begin to unfold as they travel together. Their journey is punctuated by a string of mishaps—Gavin loses his wallet, the car breaks down, they hop onto the wrong bus, and a flurry of other setbacks threaten to derail their mission.
When they finally reach Glasgow, a police misunderstanding sees Gavin treated as a van thief, adding a layer of danger to the reunion with family and the looming party. Through it all, he discovers that Yvonne has been fleeing an arranged wedding to a man she doesn’t love, and he finds himself drawn to her more hopeful, less cynical view of life. The trip becomes less about a last-ditch bid for money and more about finding a sense of purpose, connection, and belonging.
In the end, Gavin brings Yvonne to the birthday celebration with a renewed perspective and, crucially, chooses to reject the cash offered by his uncle, signaling a shift from chasing money to pursuing what truly matters. The road trip, the near misses, and the revelation of love culminate in a quiet, transformative decision that redefines his path forward.
