In the lively borough of Queens, 17-year-old orphan El finds himself laboring in his late mother’s sneaker shop, “Laces”, under the scrutinizing gaze of his stepfather Trey. As El grapples with overwhelming responsibilities, his stepbrothers Zelly and Stacy enjoy a carefree existence, resulting in frequent clashes over his duties. Luckily, his best friend Sami, a fellow sneaker enthusiast, stands by his side, sharing their love for trendy footwear. Their bond grows as they anticipate the release of a sought-after sneaker model, where El meets the enchanting Kira, who is captivated by his unusual skill to read people’s personalities through their shoes.

As the hours pass, El and Kira become increasingly enmeshed in one another, absorbed in their budding romance until reality interrupts their idyllic moment. El rushes back to the store, leaving Kira with no means to reconnect. This setback angers Trey even further, resulting in El being grounded, which delights Zelly and Stacy.

Back at home, Kira reveals her identity as the daughter of Darius King, a celebrated basketball player turned sneaker mogul. Inspired by El’s perspective, she persuades her father to allow her to explore innovative design concepts prior to the upcoming SneakerCon, rather than adhering to her older sister Liv’s conventional style.

In an effort to connect with Kira, El and Sami devise a plan to crash King’s charity gala. The impending sale of the family store and Trey’s struggles to run the business alone inspire El to channel his late mother’s legacy into crafting a unique shoe design, gathering ideas from the surrounding community.

The night of the gala arrives, but Zelly and Stacy plot against El, confining him to the stockroom. Their scheme is thwarted by Gustavo, the enigmatic guardian of the community garden, who supplies El and Sami with fancy attire, tickets, and a classic convertible. Gustavo warns them to leave by midnight to avoid dire consequences.

At the gala, El’s custom kicks become the center of attention, fueled by Sami’s inadvertent claims that El is an emerging independent designer. El reconnects with Kira, preparing to be introduced to her father as the creative mind behind the buzz, but soon they are compelled to make a hasty exit as midnight strikes.

Afterward, one of El’s shoes is lost on an escalator but is soon found by Kira. Determined to uncover the identity of the designer behind the sensation, she and Liv start a viral campaign to locate her “prince,” triggering a series of events that will profoundly change their lives. Torn between honesty and the desire to impress, El ultimately succumbs to Sami’s convincing charm, agreeing to meet Kira’s father. Meanwhile, Zelly and Stacy take advantage of El’s hesitation by stealing his other shoe, undermining El’s credibility when he arrives at Darius’ residence, where he faces skepticism and rejection from both Darius and Kira.

Just as Trey plans to close the store and move the family back to New Jersey, El’s creative ambitions come to an abrupt stop. Frustrated, he discards his designs, setting the stage for Gustavo’s serendipitous encounter that leads to a series of revelations about El’s struggle to gain approval from Kira’s father, which parallels his own quest for validation.

The next morning, El awakens to find a pair of sneakers featuring his design, masterfully crafted by Gustavo and inspired by Kira’s ideas. As Sami keeps Zelly and Stacy occupied, El rushes to the much-anticipated King brand sneaker drop, where he and Kira share heartfelt apologies amidst the emotional tense atmosphere.

As Trey’s stepsons plot to confront El while commandeering a moving truck, Sami implores Trey to reassess his harsh approach to El following his mother’s death. Empowered with a renewed determination, El impresses Darius with his true intentions, extraordinary design skills, and deep feelings for Kira. However, Zelly and Stacy’s interruptions create further tension in the proceedings.

Trey intervenes just in time, regaining control over his misled sons. He extends an olive branch towards El, expressing remorse for his previous treatment and wishing for the opportunity to be a supportive father figure. Darius, impressed by El, appoints him as his new go-to designer. A year later, El and Kira are enjoying a romantic relationship, while “Laces” has transformed into “El-evate,” a thriving sneaker shop celebrating groundbreaking designs tailored for the community in Queens.
