Set in the end-times, or The Great Tribulation, the world has fallen under the rule of the Antichrist, the Leader, as the mark of the beast is pushed worldwide. The implant, placed in the right hand or on the forehead, marks those who accept it as members of a system called “The Community,” while those who refuse are arrested and jailed; after three weeks they are beheaded on guillotines. This harsh, controlled landscape shapes every choice and consequence in the story.
Two non-Christian renegades steal a car for a friend who has also refused the mark. When they reach his place, they discover he has reconsidered and taken the mark, insisting that he now “feels so much happier.” > “feels so much happier”
The two renegades are soon captured by police and hauled to jail, where the film tightens its focus on the human costs of the regime.
Smuggler Tom Newman, [Jeffrey Dean Morgan], is captured by a police unit led by Jeseca Newman, [Amy Moon], his ex-wife who took the mark. Tom is tortured until he agrees to infiltrate a Christian group inside the jail in order to locate and execute Elijah Cohen, [Cosimo Michael Occhipinti], a Christian rebel leader who remains at large. Jeseca warns him that any attempt to escape will result in his capture and transfer to Preston Scott, [Brad Heller], for further torture.
All three—Tom, the other two inmates, and their uneasy dynamic in the jail—conspire to escape, aiming for Prodigal City, a safe haven for non-citizens. Brody Sutton, [David A.R. White], and Tom are drawn into this plan, even as Brody grows uneasy about the prospect of living under the regime in any form. The pursuit intensifies as Preston Scott closes in, and the two men face brutal consequences for resisting the system.
In the end, Tom refuses the mark and is beheaded, while Brody accepts it, offering a stark, heartbreaking line to close the arc: > “It was the wrong choice.”
