In a quiet village nestled among Java’s rice fields and dense forests, a long-standing myth warns against whistling after maghrib. The film opens with a man who tries to catch birds by whistling, only to be seized from behind the trees and dragged into the shadowy woods. Ipung [Ardhana Jovin], a curious child who lives with his grandparents on the village edge, finds his world balancing between everyday life and the whispers of the unseen. Their humble home sits near the fields, where the sounds of dusk drift through the leaves and the nights begin to murmur with stories old and deep.
Ipung, along with his two friends, Didit [Rafa Juliano Alfarizqi] and Kholis [Muchlis Mustafa], bicycles out to chase a broken kite that has drifted into the forest. It’s almost dark when the kite tumbles into the heart of the trees. Ipung is eager to retrieve it, but Kholis urges him to return home, insisting that some thresholds are better left alone. The village holds a powerful belief in singsot, the rule about not whistling at twilight, for to break it could summon the bloodthirsty whistling demon. Ipung, who treats the myth with skepticism, brushes off the warning, while his grandmother Mbah Wedok [Sri Isworowati] watches with worry from a doorway that faces the encroaching forest.
Mbah Lanang [Landung Simatupang] scolds Ipung for defying the locals’ caution, then steps out for his own night patrol. As he moves past Mbah Darmo’s house, he learns troubling news from a neighbor: Mbah Darmo has died, though the conversation is tangled with rumors and superstition. The next day, a different danger emerges—a man named Agus Pete [Jamaluddin Latif], once strong and healthy, lies weak at home after the incident in the trees. When Wiwik [Siti Fauziah], Agus Pete’s wife, brings him food, his eyes widen in fear, as if he sees something beyond the ordinary.
The town’s atmosphere grows heavier as Ipung begins to experience spectral presences and unsettling nightmares. At Mbah Darmo’s funeral, whispers circulate about Pete and Wiwik, and a deeper link to the afflictions that plague the village starts to emerge. During a local bird competition, Mbah Lanang confides in Mbah Manto about the strange events, and an old explanation surfaces: the death of Darmo’s cherished bird Petruk, long believed to be its protector, might be connected to Agus Pete’s illness. Mbah Lanang senses that some ancient taboo was violated, an act that has unsettled the balance between the living and the spirits.
Back at home, Mbah Wedok grapples with a crisis of her own. She performs a ritual, attempting to cast her husband’s golden egg into the water to calm the disturbances, but the ritual leaves her ill and weakened. Wiwik arrives with a prepared dish to comfort Ipung, and as she notices Ipung’s pallor, she offers him a cup of jamu that seems to unlock a different realm for him. In that moment, Ipung is drawn into the spiritual world, now trapped within a house of shadows and echoes.
Recognizing that the root of the village’s misery lies with a lurking wealth spirit named Ganda Rumbing, Mbah Manto taps into his supernatural awareness to guide the living toward the truth. He reveals that Agus Pete and Wiwik had performed the ritual known as Kutut Manggung to escape poverty, but their failure to follow the terms has allowed Pete’s spirit to become trapped in the earthly realm, mutating his body into a fragile, paralyzed state. The price for their desperation becomes steep: Agus Pete must find a replacement to take his place, or he risks never returning. The clock begins to tick ominously with a forty-day window.
Ipung’s nightmarish journey widens as Agus Pete’s influence reaches his school and his home. Mbah Lanang, propelled by a growing sense of urgency, seeks help from Pakdhe Tirto [Alex Suhendra], while Mbah Wedok’s attempt to preserve her family’s safety unfolds as she secretly casts her husband’s golden egg away, a move that triggers a new wave of illness and vulnerability within the household. Ipung’s spirit-world voyage intensifies, and Mbah Lanang discerns that the key to saving the boy lies in the protection of an ancient talisman—one that will require courage, compassion, and a bridge between worlds.
To confront the danger, Mbah Lanang receives a wooden bird carving from Mbah Manto that becomes a critical tool. With this carved guide, he steps into the spiritual realm alongside Ipung, determined to lead the boy back to the safety of the human world. Their path, however, is blocked by Agus Pete, whose desperation intensifies as he fights to maintain his grip on reality. The struggle reaches a fierce moment when Pete attempts to choke Ipung, only to be thwarted momentarily by Mbah Lanang—until Pete lashes out, literally turning the struggle on its head.
The next day brings a brutal reversal of Pete’s control. He regains consciousness and resumes his schemes with renewed vigor, treating the forest and the house as extensions of his plan. In a shocking turn of events, Pete discovers his wife’s severed head in a birdcage—a grim revelation that shatters his resolve and sends him fleeing in terror. Meanwhile, Mbah Lanang continues his quiet, relentless march toward home, walking barefoot and closing the circle of this ordeal as he arrives back at his own doorstep, where the world’s boundaries between the seen and unseen seem to waver one final time.
Throughout the film, the threads of belief, memory, and fear intertwine as the villagers confront the consequences of broken taboos and the costs of seeking wealth through forbidden rites. The story moves with a measured pace, never overdramatizing the peril but instead letting the slow horror of a community under strain unfold. At its core lies a fatherly urge to protect, a grandmother’s vigilance, and a child’s readiness to listen to the old warnings even as they learn to navigate a world where the living and the spirits are never entirely separate.
In the end, the village’s balance is restored not by thunderous revelations, but by a quiet reconciliation between generations and the careful restoration of the rules that bind them. The figures of Mbah Lanang, Ipung, Wiwik, and the others return from the shadows with a renewed sense of caution and a deeper respect for the myths that define their home. The forest remains, but its edge has shifted from threat to lesson, and the community steps forward with a new awareness of the fragile ties that connect the past, the present, and what might come after.
