J. K. Balaganapathi Sivakumar is a celebrated Carnatic singer whose astonishing talent lights up the stage, but his home life is more unsettled than his concerts. His wife, Bhairavi Sulakshana, despite her love and loyalty, struggles to challenge him on a mental level, and the absence of children weighs on him. In his musical circle, the band includes the mridangam player Gurumoorthy Delhi Ganesh and the tanpura player Gajapathi Janagaraj, a man whose habit of lying creates friction and distrust among them.
During a concert, JKB discovers Gurumoorthy intoxicated and, with a firm hand, orders him to leave the premises, deciding to perform without the mridangam—an unusual move in a Carnatic setting. When Gurumoorthy pledges never to drink again, the show continues in a relatively tense but professional mood. The rift in the band widens as JKB demands a clean slate, urging Gurumoorthy to separate personal failings from professional duty.
Meanwhile, Bhairavi’s family faces a delicate moment as Bhairavi’s grandfather is about to receive his monthly pension. Gajapathi, ever the trickster, lies to him that the pension has been canceled. The old man’s tears reveal how deeply he relies on that steady income, and JKB steps in to reassure him that the pension is intact, even helping him collect it. This incident leads to a stern rebuke for Gajapathi, who is reminded of the gravity of deception and the danger of breaking the trust of an elderly man who values his pension. JKB then makes Gajapathi promise to speak the truth from that point forward, underscoring a quiet but firm moral code within the group.
At a different concert, Sindhu, a music teacher, attends JKB’s performance where he is singing a Tyagaraja keerthana in Telugu. Sindhu observes people in the audience chatting away instead of listening with focus. She asks JKB to translate the song into Tamil so every listener can understand its message. He challenges her, but she rises to the occasion and demonstrates the translation’s seamless connection to Tamil, drawing applause and prompting JKB to walk off mid-performance. This moment marks the beginning of a respectful, if initially provocative, exchange between the two.
A few days later, Sindhu offers a formal apology, and JKB discovers that her intellect matches his own. Their mutual respect evolves into a bond that many would interpret as an intellectual attraction, but social norms blur that line into a more intimate connection. Gajapathi, who has pledged honesty, informs Bhairavi that her husband is spending time with Sindhu, further fueling the sense of scandal. Yet Sindhu’s feelings grow deeper for JKB, and their relationship quietly deepens despite the external pressures.
One day, JKB is seen leaving Sindhu’s apartment by Bhairavi, and the rumor mill quickly brands Sindhu as a home wrecker. The stigma forces Sindhu to end the affair, while JKB spirals toward despair, leaning on alcohol to cope. In this downward arc, he even cashes in his own artistic integrity by trading his musical knowledge for a drink, a moment that coincides with him stealing money from Bhairavi’s grandfather—an act that precipitates the old man’s death. Sindhu returns to help steady him, but she carries a secret of her own: she is pregnant.
Sindhu’s return brings a glimmer of hope as she helps rehabilitate JKB, yet the social and personal costs of their choices linger. When his friends pressure Sindhu to leave town to protect Bhairavi’s dignity, she complies, departing the scene a second time, leaving behind a complicated aftertaste of love, art, and sacrifice. Months pass as JKB continues to perform, with Bhairavi by his side, their relationship strained but enduring in the wake of hardship.
Then, during another concert, Sindhu steps back into the spotlight. She watches from the audience as the music fills the hall, and she makes a decisive choice: she will not marry JKB, choosing instead to honor Bhairavi’s rights and place. In a bold, aching act of defiance against rigid norms, Sindhu relinquishes her child to Bhairavi to be raised, and she leaves town to pursue and share her deep knowledge of music with the less fortunate. The story closes with a quiet sense that art, autonomy, and courage can coexist with heartbreak, and that music can connect lives even as personal paths diverge.
