Sylvia Brenner, Constance Bennett, is a plain-spoken secretary sharing a tight apartment with two friends, scraping by on a modest income. She works for a sharp-witted divorce attorney, Gaylord Stanton, Kenneth MacKenna, who flirts with married women and treats marriage as a mere arrangement. Sylvia harbors a quiet love for him, a feeling that sits heavy on her days.

When the married Grace Lawrence, Rita La Roy, decides to walk away from her husband to marry Gaylord, the attorney realizes the risk of real commitment. He devises a plan: he will pay Sylvia to marry him in name only, freeing him to continue his nocturnal pursuits. Desperate yet hopeful, Sylvia agrees to the arrangement.

After the ceremony, Sylvia is whisked off to Paris by Gaylord, a move intended to keep her out of the way while he pursues new conquests. In the French capital, Sylvia uses the money she has to reinvent herself, shedding her former insecurities and adopting a more polished, confident persona. There, she reconnects with Reginald Durant, Basil Rathbone, an urbane acquaintance of her boss who is instantly drawn to Sylvia. He introduces her to the allure of a cosmopolitan lifestyle, from elegant dinners to fashionable circles, and she begins to feel the pull of a life she hadn’t dared to imagine.

Reginald’s affection deepens into love, and he asks Sylvia to divorce Gaylord so she can marry him. Temptation and loyalty tug at her as she weighs a brighter future against the life she already knows. For a time she falters, but ultimately she returns to the United States with a renewed sense of self and a clearer idea of what she wants.

Back home, Sylvia’s striking transformation does not go unnoticed. Grace spurs a determined bid to win Gaylord back, but in the end, Gaylord and Sylvia discover that their feelings have changed and that a genuine connection has formed between them.
