Ben Thompson leads a guns-for-Indians gang on the frontier, pushing rifles toward the Apaches as tensions rise on the dusty trail. Three of the crew ride into a western town to ambush two marshals, but their plan goes awry and they only manage to kill one of the lawmen. In the aftermath, the surviving gang members debate their next move; Bentley, who has survived an earlier fate and now longs for California, speaks plainly that he’d rather head west, while Thompson gives him a simple nod to go ahead and follow that impulse.

In town, the other marshal, Clay Hardin(/actor/sterling-hayden), makes a dramatic choice: he abandons a fiancé and a government assignment to hunt down the gang. On the trail, Hardin encounters Bentley, who has been captured by Apaches and left for dead, and Abby, a former saloon worker seeking a fresh start in California. Hardin frees both of them, but Bentley’s gratitude is short-lived; he later attempts to shoot Hardin and is killed in the confrontation, a brutal reminder of the difficulty of starting anew on this harsh landscape. Abby and a pursuer’s ally close in on Hardin, while Carlton’s presence continues to complicate the pursuit; a cooking fire he starts alerts the Apaches, and Hardin, hearing the distant commotion, races back to find Abby in danger. He rides into the Apache camp with his shotgun and rescues her from danger, a moment that underscores both the physical dangers and the deepening bond between Hardin and Abby.

Delgadito then proposes a final, symbolic showdown to settle their differences: a horseback shotgun duel, with each fighter allowed a single cartridge. Thompson fires first, aiming to crippling Hardin’s horse, and when Hardin falls, Thompson is unable to capitalize on his advantage. The Apache chief intervenes in the clash, and Delgadito kills Thompson with a swift spear cast, ending the gang’s threat in a decisive, ritualistic moment that reinforces the frontier’s complex code of justice.

In the wake of the duel, Abby and Hardin share a quiet, pistol-free resolution. Abby confesses that she would rather join him on the ranch than head for California, suggesting a future built on shared effort and a desire for stability rather than perpetual pursuit.
