In a tale of romance tangled with social pressure, Kitty Lane, a down-on-her-luck waitress, falls for David Livingston, a wealthy doctor. Their budding relationship immediately collides with the protective, status-conscious [Mrs. Livingston], who will do whatever it takes to keep her son on a respectable path. To sabotage the romance, she leans on her confidant Judge Forbes; he first tries bribery, and when that fails, arranges for Kitty to be jailed on a bogus morals charge. The scheme plays out in a world where appearances matter and moral judgments are swift, leaving Kitty to face hardship while David’s own life and career are put under strain. Meanwhile, Mrs. Livingston convinces her son that Kitty is to blame for taking a $5,000 bribe—an accusation designed to sever the couple’s bond.

Years pass. Kitty reinvent herself as a successful showgirl, attracting a crowd of admirers, while David continues his work as a physician. When their paths cross again, the old flame is rekindled, though Kitty remains wary of David’s resolve in the face of his mother’s unyielding opposition.
