Shooting Straight 1930

Larry Sheldon, Richard Dix, a gambler, learns that a friend has been murdered by a local gangster, Spot Willis. When he goes to confront Spot, a melee breaks out and Spot is killed. Fearing that he owns the crime, Sheldon flees the city aboard a train, accompanied by his wary companion, Chick, George Cooper. The two share a Pullman compartment with an itinerant minister, Mr. Walters, whose wallet Chick quietly lifts from his pocket. Once Sheldon realizes the theft, he chastises Chick and resolves to return the pilfered purse to its rightful owner. But before he can, the train is derailed in a serious accident, and Sheldon is knocked unconscious.

When he comes to, he finds himself recovering in the home of Reverend Powell, James Neill. Because he now possesses Walters’ wallet, the Reverend mistakes Sheldon for the evangelist, a mislabel Sheldon chooses not to correct, secretly hoping it will help him stay one step ahead of the law. As days pass, a quiet transformation takes hold: Sheldon begins to fall for Doris Powell, Mary Lawlor, the Reverend’s daughter, and he grows more earnest about the idea of preaching, even as he navigates life under a false identity.

The delicate balance is shattered when the Reverend’s son, Tommy Powell, William Janney, loses a significant amount of money to a local gambler, Ace Martin, Matthew Betz. Sheldon rushes to Tommy’s aid, but his proximity to Ace Martin brings him under scrutiny, and Martin calls in the police, tightening the net around him. Throughout the tension, the investigation presses on, with Detective Regan, Robert Emmett O’Connor, quietly weighing the evidence and pursuing the truth.

In a turn that tilts the story toward a clean reconciliation, it is finally revealed that Sheldon did not actually kill Spot Willis; a confession from another man clears him of the murder charge.
