In 1813 Portugal, a band of deserters that includes Sharpe’s longtime foe Obadiah Hakeswill seize two women—one the wife of a senior British officer—and demand ransom. Sharpe is tasked with leading the 60th Rifles, a rocket troop and his own men to rescue them. While he expects to confront Hakeswill, a new adversary, French Major Pierre Ducos, also emerges.
