In this taut thriller, a traveling salesman named Fred J. Johnson has a day on the golf course that starts with an astonishing hole-in-one. He writes his initials and the date on the lucky ball and tees off again, only to send the same ball careening into a ditch. When he goes to retrieve it, he stumbles upon a dead woman and, beside her, a small package containing plates for forging dollar bills. Fred secretly pockets the package, setting in motion a chain of events that pulls him into a dangerous world of crime and threats.

The repercussions ripple through Fred’s life as the murderer and his wife return to claim what they believe to be theirs. They find Fred’s marked golf ball and suspect a man with the initials “F.J.” has taken the plates, and they warn him not to go to the police, threatening to kill him and his whole family if he talks. Fred, wary of the danger, returns home and opens the package to discover an address to a print shop where the plates are kept. He decides against contacting the police, remembering the grave warning, and the couple heads back to their boss, Lefty. Lefty’s reaction is cool and calculating; he chastises them for losing the package, and the menace in his tone hints at grimmer consequences if trust is broken.

The crime makes front-page news the next day, and Fred finds that his lucky charm—part of his watch chain—has vanished. Meanwhile, his daughters’ social lives become entangled in the danger surrounding the plates. Carol begins a date with a banker named Mark Bellaman, while Ginny accompanies her young admirer, Lester Binkey—a budding criminologist—on visits to the golf course. While investigating the crime scene, Ginny discovers the missing lucky charm, deepening the personal stakes for Fred.

Adopting a detective’s posture, the murderer returns to the golf club, pressing a gardener for a list of everyone who played the course the day before. He overhears Ginny mention her name and realizes she is Fred’s daughter, which gives him additional leverage. He offers to drive her home, claiming to be an old friend of her father, and the danger grows closer to home.

Fred attempts to discreetly relay the plates to the police by mail, but is followed by Lefty. A fortunate coincidence—a police friend of Fred’s happens to be nearby—prevents Lefty from seizing the plates. The tension tightens as Lt. Braden interviews Ginny after she runs from the scene when approached by a policeman with Lester. Braden’s suspicions grow when Fred’s account of Lester’s conversation with him differs from Lester’s statements at the station, prompting him to assign a wary tail to Fred through his officer, Sellers.

That night, Ginny is kidnapped by Lefty and his gang, who demand the plates in exchange for her safe return. After a tense exchange, Ginny is recovered, but the danger persists. Tony, the murderer, pulls a gun on Fred, only for Fred’s wife Edna to panic and cry out for help, triggering Tony to shoot Edna in the back. Fred retaliates with a swift blow from a golf club and then confronts Lefty, reminding him of how long he has relied on fear—Lefty complies and waits for the police.

The following day, Fred is portrayed as a hero in the press for bringing the murderer to justice, and the family is finally reunited in relief and happiness. The story closes on a note of restored balance, but the memory of the peril lingers, underscoring the fragile line between ordinary life and criminal peril.

The film features performances by David F. Sandberg and Lotta Losten.
