Captain Sundara Pandian, Vijayakanth, a terminally ill convict, is hospitalized and nearing death, yet he slips past security and makes a bold break for Nilambur. He confronts a young couple, Ashok Ramki and Ponni Nirosha, who are fleeing from an unseen danger. As they hurry to board a train, Sundara Pandian endures a brutal headache and collapses on the railway tracks. In a tense rescue, Ashok leaps from the speeding carriage to pull him clear, and in the chaotic moment Ponni is dragged away by a gang pursuing them. The remainder of the attackers swarm Ashok, threatening to overwhelm him, but Sundara Pandian stirs, subdues the raiders, and keeps the trio alive as the train zips away.
Ashok and his confidante Gopal shelter Sundara Pandian, but the doctor who treats Sundara Pandian, Dr. Sundaramurthy, decides to track his patient down on his own, disillusioned by police inefficiency and the sense that time is running out. In the shelter, Ashok and Ponni begin to understand why the pursuers were so relentless, and the pieces of a crowded past start to click into place.
The story behind Ponni’s predicament unfolds as Ashok explains his own arrival in Nilambur as a field officer who fell for Ponni after hearing her sing. Ponni is the daughter of Rajavelu, a landlord worn down by his wife’s death and ruled by an ambitious second wife, Ponnamma, who torments Ponni in a bid to seize her wealth. Ponni’s childhood marriage was arranged by Ponnamma, and after Rajavelu’s death, Ponni remains under Ponnamma’s control. The village holds onto memories of Oomaiyan, Ponnamma’s son, once kind to Ponni, who leaves after a fierce quarrel with his mother, promising to return. As Ponni’s feelings for Ashok grow, Ponnamma discovers the truth and swears to drive a wedge between them, setting the stage for a personal and emotional battle that will reach far beyond Nilambur.
A nonlinear thread of Soundarapandian’s life breaks through the present, revealing a man who served as a soldier and, alongside a young teacher named Radha, jailed a local thug named Udayappan. Soundarapandian later marries Radha, and a servant joins their growing household. When Udayappan escapes from prison, he murders Soundarapandian’s wife, his son, and the servant. Soundarapandian kills Udayappan in turn, but the scars of the attack endure. The servant who dies is Ponni’s stepbrother, Oomaiyan, whose dying wish is for Soundarapandian to save Ponni from the clutches of Ponnamma. This chain of tragedies brings Soundarapandian back to the village, where a plan to spirit Ponni away is hatched but ultimately fails, leaving him nearly dead and in the care of Sundaramurthy’s intervention.
As Sundaramurthy’s diagnosis tightens the clock, Ashok faces a difficult choice: should he leave Ponni and the village so Soundarapandian can continue his treatment, or stay and fight for a final chance to secure Ponni’s future? After much reflection, he remains, and the group—Ponni, Ashok, Sundaramurthy, and Sundara Pandian—strikes one last, desperate bid to rescue Ponni from a life of coercion and danger.
In the end, Ponni’s father—C L Anandan—takes a pivotal, bittersweet turn. He helps Ponni escape the clutches of Ponnamma and, in a painful act of remonstrance, asks his wife to poison herself before he ends his own life. Ponnamma and her husband perish, but the danger is not entirely erased; goons give chase as the four fugitives cling to a perilous hope. The climax unfolds on a moving train, where Ashok, Ponni, Sundaramurthy, and Sundara Pandian manage to escape with Sundara Pandian gravely weakened but alive, leaving the audience with a hard-won sense of resilience, redemption, and the uncertain promise of a safer future.
