Kabilan Arya grows up as a Dalit labourer at the Madras Port, nursing a fierce dream of boxing stardom just like his father Munirathnam Kishore. His mother Bakkiyam Anupama Kumar forbids the pursuit, fearing the violence that claimed his father’s life, but Kabilan’s Anglo-Indian godfather Daddy John Vijay quietly backs his passion and feeds him a stubborn belief that he could conquer the ring.

In the mid-1970s, as The Emergency tightens its grip, a major boxing tournament is hosted by Rangan Vaathiyar Pasupathy, a respected coach aligned with the Sarpatta clan and a DMK figure. The clash pits Sarpatta’s Meeran Sai Tamil against Idiyappan’s Vembuli John Kokken. Rangan vows to raise a champion strong enough to topple Vembuli, with the audacious condition that Sarpatta will forfeit boxing forever if defeated. He initially tests Raman, but grows frustrated with his progress. After Raman insults the coach, Kabilan decisively defeats him, and the betting crowd shifts its gaze toward this unexpected amateur.

Seeing raw talent, Rangan decides to train Kabilan in Raman’s stead, a decision that stirs resentment among Idiyappan loyalists. Daddy throws down a challenge to Dancing Rose Shabeer Kallarakkal, a legendary footwork stylist, betting that Kabilan can outbox even the most storied veteran. The Blob of doubt from the crowd swells when Kabilan defeats Rose, provoking Vembuli to taunt him in advance of their long-anticipated duel. Raman’s uncle Thaniga plots to undermine Kabilan, offering help if the underdog falters, and the atmosphere grows tense with pro- and anti-Sarpatta factions clashing on the streets.

The final rounds begin with Kabilan dominating Vembuli for most of the match, nearly flattening his rival in the fourth. In a dramatic pause, the police storm in to arrest Rangan as the DMK government has been dismissed and MISA orders are issued against prominent DMK leaders. The crowd refuses to disperse, and the match teeters on a cliff’s edge. Just as Kabilan readies a final, decisive blow, Thaniga’s henchmen interrupt with a brutal assault, stripping Kabilan naked and forcing the bout to end without a winner. Rangan and other party members are imprisoned, a blow that reverberates through every Sarpatta fighter.

Recovering from a head injury and a creeping weariness, Kabilan contemplates a quieter life with Bakkiyam and his wife Mariyamma Dushara Vijayan. He and Vetri Kalaiyarasan decide to lay low, but fate drags him back when Thaniga’s provocation erupts into renewed violence and Kabilan is jailed for six months after defending himself with a sword.

By 1978, Kabilan and Vetri turn to bootleg liquor. Vetri leverages his position inside the AIADMK to legitimize the operation, pulling Kabilan deeper into a criminal underworld while his personal life frays—he sinks into alcohol and distance grows with his mother and wife. Rangan, released in 1979, is unsettled by the changes in Kabilan and Raman’s decisive defeat at the hands of Vembuli—a sobering reminder of lost glory. With Daddy’s encouragement, Kabilan returns to training under Munirathnam’s associate Beedi Rayappan [Beedi Rayappan] in a bid to regain his form. The comeback begins in earnest as he rebuilds his fitness and technique.

The rematch finally unfolds with Vembuli brutalizing Kabilan in the early rounds, only for the Sarpatta camp—led by Rangan, Vetri, Meeran [Sai Tamil], and Lakshmi Sanchana Natarajan—to rally around him. A renewed focus, teamwork, and grit help Kabilan protect his shoulder and push through pain. A late surge blossoms into victory: Kabilan lands a decisive knockout in the closing rounds, lifting the Sarpatta clan to their peak after years of struggle. The ring becomes a stage for redemption, resilience, and the hard-won triumph of a community that refuses to surrender.
