Raja Ajay Devgn and Madhu Karisma Kapoor meet at a college, where they start as sworn enemies but gradually become friends before they part ways and return to their separate homes. Raja remains unaware that Madhu has fallen in love with him, and neither of them knows about the deep family feud that shadows their lives.

Years earlier, Raja’s father, Thakur Surajbhan Singh Tomar [Danny Denzongpa], shattered the heart of Thakur Shamsher Singh Rana’s sister, a wound that drove her to suicide. When Shamsher discovers his daughter’s love for Surajbhan’s son, he forbids the match. Yet Shamsher’s wife, [Reema Lagoo], cannot bear her daughter’s grief and goes to seek help from Surajbhan’s wife to help end the feud between the two families. Surajbhan agrees to try to heal the rift and visits Shamsher to propose that their children be allowed to marry, but Shamsher warns him not to break his daughter’s heart the way he broke his sister’s.

Meanwhile, Raja is unaware that his future is being shaped by an arranged marriage to Madhu, even as he has fallen for Pallavi, a poor girl living on his father’s estate. When Shamsher learns that Raja does not wish to marry his daughter, he vows to destroy Surajbhan’s family, while Surajbhan is equally furious at Raja’s defiance. Madhu, distressed by the unfolding tension, ingests poison but is saved by her family’s intervention.

Shamsher then informs Pallavi that he will kill Raja if the latter refuses to marry his daughter, prompting Pallavi to tell Raja that she never loved him and only agreed to marry him for his money. A heartbroken Raja returns home, and to seal their fate, Surajbhan orders Pallavi’s hut set ablaze. Her father is killed in the blaze, but Pallavi survives. Pallavi is carried away by Surajbhan’s men and dumped far from sight, while Raja’s uncle reveals the truth about Shamsher’s threats and his father’s past actions. Raja eventually finds Pallavi and a priest is summoned to officiate their marriage.

During the ceremony, Shamsher and his men assault the couple. Surajbhan rushes in to protect his son, and in the ensuing fight, Shamsher accidentally shoots Madhu. As she lies dying, Madhu asks Raja for forgiveness and implores her father to end the family feud, leaving the saga to hang on a thread of reconciliation and tragedy.
