In 1951, at an inn on the Mendocino County coast, Doris Ellen Burstyn, a 24-year-old housewife from Oakland, meets George Peters Alan Alda, a 27-year-old accountant from New Jersey, at dinner. They share a charged tryst, and, despite both being happily married with six children between them, agree to meet once a year at the same hotel for one night together.

The film unfolds in five-year jumps, tracing their evolving identities, the pressures of their marriages, and the stubborn thread of connection that holds them together across decades. By 1966, George, now middle-aged and wearing a suit, is stunned when Doris arrives in denim with her hair flowing to her waist, having enrolled at UC Berkeley and embraced a committed left-wing outlook. George reveals his own shift toward conservatism, shaped in part by the death of his son in Vietnam the previous year.

When they meet again in 1977, George reveals that his wife Helen died earlier that year, and that she had learned of the affair for ten years but kept quiet. Now a widower, George proposes to Doris, who declines out of loyalty and respect for her husband. Dejected, George leaves, but quickly returns, and the couple vows to continue their clandestine bond as long as they are able, balancing affection with a steady, unspoken understanding of their shared past and uncertain future.
