Amid the chaos of the Malmedy massacre, a pivotal event during World War II, several American soldiers manage to escape their German captors and take refuge in a nearby forest. This horrifying incident, carried out by the Waffen-SS on December 17, 1944, occurred at the Baugnez crossroads near Malmedy, Belgium, during the intense Battle of the Bulge. Kampfgruppe Peiper executed a gruesome war crime, summarily killing eighty-four U.S. Army prisoners of war (POWs) who had surrendered after a brief conflict. The captured soldiers were herded into a farmer’s field, where they met a tragic fate at the barrels of machine guns.

During their desperate escape, Corporal Nathan “Deacon” Greer (Corbin Allred) displays a moment of mercy when he disarms a German soldier but chooses not to shoot him, despite the urging of medic Private Steven Gould (Alexander Niver). Deacon, who possesses a modest command of the German language, finds himself accompanied by fellow survivors Private Shirley “Shirl” Kendrick (Larry Bagby) and Staff Sergeant Gordon “Gundy” Gunderson (Peter Asle Holden). Gunderson suggests they remain hidden until the Allies can reclaim the area, and the group takes shelter in an abandoned building, armed with only one German rifle and four rounds of ammunition for their defense. Their journey reveals the stark reality of war, as they stumble across a decimated American ambulance.

Throughout this harrowing ordeal, Deacon grapples with intense hallucinations of the deceased, a torment that he conceals from his comrades. When a German patrol draws near, the men hide beneath the floorboards. In this tense moment, Deacon intercepts snippets of a German conversation regarding a downed plane nearby. After the Germans leave, they encounter Flight Sergeant Oberon Winley ([Kirby Heyborne]), a British pilot whose suspicions soon test the American soldiers’ loyalties as he quizzes them about U.S. Presidents and the capital of Vermont.

Winley reveals that he possesses critical intelligence that could change the tide of battle. He explains that he was on a reconnaissance mission, capturing photographs of enemy troop movements. According to him, the Germans plan to cross the Meuse River and target the city of Liege, which harbors the largest German ammunition stockpile outside of their homeland. Gunderson, recognizing the potential for saving numerous lives, champions the mission to relay this intelligence to Allied forces, even as Gould expresses his reservations.

Tensions mount within the group when Kendrick, craving a cigarette, encounters Winley’s rudeness and refusal to share. As they journey onward, Deacon’s mental state deteriorates; his hallucinations intensify, exacerbated by the sleepless nights of the last four days. Gunderson gently pries into Deacon’s past, revealing the guilt he carries for having accidentally harmed civilians during combat—the ghosts of two women and six children weigh heavily on him. He confesses that his wife is pregnant, a revelation that further deepens the emotional turmoil.

Shortly thereafter, Kendrick suffers a misstep and falls through the roof of an abandoned structure concealed by snow. In pursuit of shelter, Gunderson discovers a woman named Catherine ([Melinda Renee]) and her daughter Sophie Theary ([Ruby Chase O’Neil]) who speak French. As a brutal snowstorm encroaches, Gunderson theorizes that the Germans will be immobilized, suggesting they stay for the night. However, Winley insists on continuing to deliver his intelligence, braving the blizzard, much to the concern of the others.

Catherine brings sustenance to the soldiers, but their safety soon deteriorates when two Germans enter the vicinity. In a dramatic encounter, Deacon kills one assailant, while the other flees into the wilderness. Winley returns, now leading the surviving German captive, Rudolph ([Ethan Vincent]), revealing a complex history between him and Deacon. Having once known Deacon during his ministerial work in Berlin, Rudolph inadvertently sheds light on why Deacon’s aim has faltered.

The following morning, Deacon makes the difficult choice to release Rudolf after the German divulges the location of enemy lines and a potential route for bypassing them. Their path becomes perilous as they soon confront another German patrol. In a tragic twist, Gunderson suffers a fatal gunshot wound from a hidden sniper, prompting Deacon to retaliate. The fray results in further chaos, and Kendrick, while trying to assist Winley who has been injured, succumbs to a mortal wound.

As the group dwindles, Deacon and Gould find themselves with Winley, striving to make their way towards safety. On the brink of despair, Rudolph reappears, informing them of a nearby jeep that could serve as an escape vehicle. This sets into motion a desperate act of courage as the three soldiers don captured German uniforms and commandeer the jeep. Their charade allows them to pass through a German checkpoint thanks to Deacon’s proficiency in the language. However, their luck falters once they head toward the American lines, drawing fire from their pursuers.

Their final moments are marked by tumult as the jeep is struck by mortar fire. In an act of valor, Deacon provides covering fire, allowing Gould and Winley a chance at survival. In a heartbreaking conclusion, Deacon is shot by a sniper, sacrificing himself for his comrades. As the remaining soldiers make it back to safety, Gould finds solace amid his grief, retrieving Deacon’s Bible and placing a photograph of Deacon’s wife in his hands. He acknowledges Rudolph as they cross paths again and even extends a gesture of compassion to an injured German soldier, affirming that even in the dark shadows of war, humanity can still prevail.
