Arun, a medical student, longs to travel to England to become a doctor, in fulfillment of his father’s dying wish. In college, Sagarika enters his life as the object of his growing affection, while Shipra is a playful, impulsive girl who hopes to win his hand in marriage.
Arun writes a love poem about Sagarika, which Shipra sends to Sagarika without Arun’s knowledge. Offended, Sagarika reports Arun to the school administration, who cancel Arun’s scholarship. He returns to his village with a stubborn resolve to pursue his studies in England anyway. Shipra confesses to Sagarika that she sent the poem, and Sagarika feels guilty for causing Arun to lose his scholarship.
Plans shift as Arun travels to England and becomes engaged to Basanti, the daughter of his uncle. Meanwhile, Sagarika, now secretly in love with Arun, begins writing letters to him under Basanti’s name. Back home, Basanti cheats on Arun with Ajit, who promises to marry her.
After completing medical school, Arun suffers an accident that blinds him. When he returns to India, Basanti refuses to marry a blind man. He finds shelter with his friend Kedar, who helps him recover, while Sagarika nurses him, disguising herself as Basanti to care for him.
A renowned doctor agrees to operate on Arun’s eyes, offering a chance to regain sight. Basanti, once again, longs to marry him, creating a tense moment. After the successful operation, Sagarika flees, and Arun realizes that Basanti is not the woman who nursed him. Kedar calls Sagarika, and at last, Arun and Sagarika are reconciled.
