Gopal [Rajendra Kumar] is a skiing champion who spends a holiday in Jammu and Kashmir, where he meets Usha under the alias Sarju. The two fall in love, drawn to each other by their shared moments in the snow-dusted landscape and the easy chemistry they discover. Yet a harsh truth threads its way into their romance: Usha reveals a deeply troubling belief—she dislikes people who are disabled, arguing that living with a disability is worse than dying. This brutal honesty creates a rift in their budding relationship, even as their feelings remain strong.
When the holidays end, Gopal heads back to Delhi to face real life and the expectations of his family, including his sister Sarla, who stands by him. On the journey home, a severe car accident costs Gopal his leg, shattering the future he had pictured with Usha. The loss leaves him shaken and intensely self-conscious about how Usha would respond to his new reality. Haunted by her harsh words, he decides to withdraw rather than risk losing her, and he returns to Delhi without revealing what happened or how his life has changed.
Back in the city, Usha begins a desperate search for the missing man she loves, clinging to the hope that he is alive and that their connection can survive his disability. Her persistence drives the plot forward as she tries to bridge the distance that now separates them, worried that Gopal may be in trouble or simply out of reach.
Meanwhile, Gopal’s closest friend, Ramesh, remains unaware of the full story between Gopal and Usha and pursues his own path to happiness, attempting to win Usha’s hand. After repeated refusals, Usha’s father steps in to approve the arranged match with Ramesh, and Usha agrees to the alliance, believing it to be the dutiful path. Yet fate has one more twist in store.
On the day of the wedding, a miraculous turn of events unfolds when Mamdhu [Mehmood]—the Kashmir houseboat owner who appears briefly in the narrative—enters the scene. What begins as a lighthearted interruption gradually reveals a startling truth: Gopal and Sarju are not two different men, but one and the same person. This revelation transforms the wedding day into a charged climax, forcing the characters to confront who they truly are, what they owe to each other, and whether love can endure beyond the boundaries of identity, appearance, and social expectations. The film leaves audiences weighing themes of identity, loyalty, and the enduring power of love in the face of adversity.
