Fifty years after a devastating nuclear holocaust, humanity is pared down to two rival blocs: the Market, with Western-influenced culture, and the Confederation, shaped by Soviet-Russian influence. Open war is outlawed, and disputes are settled in gladiator-style battles between massive robots piloted by fighters known as robot jox, each contracted for ten matches. The Market’s champion, Achilles (Gary Graham), has racked up nine wins, just one victory away from a legendary tenth; the Confederation’s champion, Alexander (Paul Koslo), has likewise claimed nine opponents and eyes Alaska as the prize for a final showdown. A spy within the Market leaks strategic details to the Confederation, giving Alexander an edge in the fight for dominance. Supporting Achilles are the Market’s key minds—robot designer Dr. Matsumoto (Danny Kamekona) and strategist Tex Conway (Michael Alldredge)—the duo who have kept Achilles competitive while navigating a web of political intrigue.

When Achilles and Alexander finally clash, the battle takes a devastating turn. Achilles gains the upper hand, and Alexander fires a rocket-fisted blow that spirals out of control toward the stands. The projectile is diverted by Achilles’s reflexes, but the robot absorbs the full impact and crashes into the crowd, killing hundreds. The referees declare the match a draw and order a rematch. Achilles, shaken by the catastrophe, announces his retirement after this tenth fight and retreats to live with his brother Philip (Ian Patrick Williams) and his family, finding himself branded a traitor and a coward by the public.

A fresh challenger is introduced: Athena (Anne-Marie Johnson), a genetically engineered “gen jox” who becomes the first female robot jox. Despite the cheers for Athena, Achilles is drawn back into the arena, partly out of concern for Athena and partly due to a complicated attraction, and he agrees to face Alexander again, much to Athena’s irritation.

Behind the scenes, Matsumoto refuses to reveal the robot’s new weapons, fearing leakage through the spy. Tex Conway grows increasingly suspicious and suspects Matsumoto is the traitor. In a tense confrontation, Matsumoto reveals he has evidence that Conway’s final victory was aided by a deliberate “lucky” shot—and the truth would implicate Conway. Conway confesses and shoots Matsumoto, but Matsumoto secretly records the confession for the mission briefing. The Market leadership is shown this footage, and Conway kills himself by jumping down the robot’s elevator shaft to avoid capture.

The rematch day arrives. Athena drugs Achilles and hijacks his jox suit to take over the robot, prompting the Market to back her. While viewing Matsumoto’s briefing, the briefing footage of Conway’s crime is aired, and Conway’s death is explained to the crowd. The fight between Alexander and Athena unfolds with high drama: Athena gains the early advantage, but Alexander pressures and overpowers the robot, forcing a stand-down by the referees.

Achilles re-enters the field, seizing command of Athena’s robot from her, while Alexander’s machine is crippled by injuries sustained earlier when Athena’s arm is severed in the escalating melee. The two jox rise to the occasion, trading blows with pole-like weapons as they soar into the sky in a tense aerial duel. Achilles manages to hotwire the salvaged arm and fires a devastating fist that cripples Alexander’s robot. The victor, though, is not measured in death but in a shared recognition that a contest can end without killing a fellow jox. Achilles and Alexander clash in a final, respectful stand, then lower their weapons and exchange a poignant, traditional crash and burn thumbs-up.

In the end, the epic duel leaves a lasting impression on the world of robot jox, with the iconic gesture echoing beyond the arena. The moment would later be echoed by creators in popular culture, including a nod that fans of the Death Stranding series would recognize, highlighting the enduring symbolism of the gesture.
