Robinson Crusoe, an English cartographer, sets sail for the New World with his faithful Airedale Terrier Aynsley. A ferocious storm rips through the ship, and the pair are accidentally sealed below deck with two pampered British Shorthairs, Mal and May, while the rest of the crew escapes with their lives. Crusoe is knocked unconscious by a lantern, and Aynsley is left to mourn his master as the vessel goes down.
Regaining consciousness, Crusoe wakes on a lush island the following day and begins scanning the shore for a way off. From a distance he spots a colorful cast of island residents who will shape his fate: the elegant kingfisher Kiki, the elderly goat Scrubby, the veiled chameleon Carmello, the Malayan tapir Rosie, the ground pangolin with an Australian accent Pango, the scarlet macaw named Tuesday (real name Mak), and an echidna named Epi. The newcomers watch Crusoe warily, unsure whether the stranger is a threat, while Tuesday quietly fantasizes about a world beyond their shores.
Tensions rise as Mal and May launch an ambush that targets Kiki and the rest of the group, hoping to drive Crusoe away. Aynsley helps Crusoe save Tuesday by pulling him aboard the wreckage, and the bond between Crusoe and Tuesday begins to grow. Aynsley tries to convince the islanders that Crusoe is a friend, but Mal and May spread a darker rumor — that Crusoe has killed Tuesday — and turn the others against him. The distrust erupts into chaos as the wreckage burns, and Aynsley is pinned beneath a falling door. Tuesday escapes, but the explosion seals a grim fate for Aynsley, and the animals assume Tuesday died in the blast.
Mal and May are cast out into the dark water and wash ashore on Curse Island, a tiny refuge for bugs where the cats hope to rebuild their life away from Crusoe. Back on the main island, Crusoe, soaked and sorrowful, is approached by his new friends. Scrubby’s health falters, but the others rally around Crusoe as he begins to lay down roots — literally and figuratively — building a home that marks his new start. Kiki grows frustrated with the growing tolerance for Crusoe’s humble, shared lifestyle, especially as life on the island becomes more settled and communal.
Meanwhile, Mal and May manage to survive by feasting on bugs, and over time May gives birth to a growing litter of kittens, complicating the balance of the island’s fragile ecology. Eventually the cats decide to reclaim their dominion by returning to the main island and trying to end Crusoe’s peaceful way of life once and for all. Though outnumbered, Crusoe and his animal friends mount a courageous defense, pushing back against the feline threat with wit and teamwork. Crusoe is knocked down in the fray, and Mal sets his home ablaze with Crusoe still inside.
Crusoe’s allies lure the cats into a wooden watchtower he built, causing the structure to collapse and hurl the cats into the black water below. They manage to salvage part of the shattered tower as a makeshift raft and escape. Just as the group begins to celebrate, Tuesday spots smoke and discovers Crusoe trapped beneath the burning wreck. He flies to the rescue, frees Crusoe from a tangle of planks, and they scramble toward safety.
Their escape is interrupted by the roar of cannons from a pirate ship, and Crusoe finds himself suddenly in the hands of bloodthirsty pirates led by Long John Silver. He’s taken aboard at dawn, and while Crusoe recounts his own version of events to the captain, Tuesday and two ship mice, Rufus and Cecil, share the true story. The pirates plot to sail away, but Crusoe learns they don’t intend to return to England — a fate that would spell the gallows for him. With Tuesday’s help, Crusoe, the mice, and the animals on the island barely manage to slip back to safety, while the cats make their way onto the pirate ship and are eventually claimed by the crew as new pets and ratters.
This retelling of survival blends friendship, adaptability, and ingenuity as Crusoe figures out how to live in harmony with his unusual, loyal neighbors while thwarting those who would have him vanish from the world.
