Red Hook Black 2011

Luis Landivar’s compelling third film, RED HOOK BLACK (89 minutes), unveils the struggles of two friends, Marco and Damian, portrayed by Kyle Fields and James Jackson respectively. These former high school football teammates—one white and one black—grapple with their identities in a neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn that feels alien to them now. As they navigate life’s challenges, their aspirations are thwarted by the weights of economic hardship and familial responsibilities that constantly pull them back.

Marco, deeply anchored in the past, clings to his role as a longshoreman. His wife, Elizabeth, played by Victoria Negri, is battling Multiple Sclerosis, while her ambitious niece, Olivia (Danielle Lozeau), yearns to break free from Brooklyn. Notably, Olivia sets her sights on Marco, longing to take him away from his burdensome life. Caught between love and obligation, Marco’s growing frustrations lead him to be tempted by Olivia’s youthful charm.

On the other hand, Damian presents a more stable figure—having rebuilt his life post-divorce. With a promising job and a new romantic interest, he’s carved a path for himself. However, his progress is threatened by the struggles of his younger brother Melvin (Keith Walker), a pothead who dreams of becoming an actor but never quite manages to achieve anything substantial.

In these tough economic times, the decisions both friends face become increasingly precarious. Should they gamble on change or remain anchored to the limited security they currently possess? The answer remains shrouded in uncertainty as they confront the overarching dilemma—whether to cut their losses and venture forth or settle for the fragile stability they have managed to maintain.
