Roy McCormick Martin Lawrence was once college basketball’s top mastermind, guiding teams with precise tactics and a relentless drive to win. Yet his focus began to drift toward endorsement deals rather than coaching, and his temper often surfaces in high-pressure moments. After a mascot mishap that becomes a public mishap, the board bans him from collegiate basketball until he can prove he can keep his anger in check.
With opportunities scarce and his reputation in flux, a surprising offer arrives from Mount Vernon Junior High School—the very place he attended as a teen—where the team, the Smelters, is hungry for leadership. The headmistress Megan Mullally believes an alumnus with real basketball cred could steer the team toward a new path, reviving a program that needs both discipline and heart.
