Raven’s End 1963

In the mid-1930s, Anders Thommy Berggren dreams of becoming a writer. His friend Sixten Ingvar Hirdwall longs to be a football player so he can travel to Paris, where he imagines meeting strangers in fur and living a different life. These ambitions are supported at home by his girlfriend, Elsie Christina Frambäck, and by his parents. The mother Emy Storm, keeps the family afloat by doing the laundry, while the father Keve Hjelm, who is unemployed, battles alcohol and gambling. The tension between aspiration and hardship threads through their days, shaping how they see the world and each other.

Anders sends a manuscript about the block they live in to a Stockholm publisher, hoping for a breakthrough. He is invited to travel to the city to discuss the book, a moment that excites his father and feels like a possible turning point for the family. But the publisher declines to publish, and when Anders returns, a shared sense of disappointment settles over the household.
