Rasukutty, the only son of the wealthy landlord Periyapannai, grows up with little schooling. His mother Eswari spoils him, while his father pushes him toward responsibility and a steadier future. But Rasukutty wastes his father’s wealth with carefree abandon, always by the side of his loyal sidekick, Sembuli Jagan. On the other side of the family, Periyapannai’s brother Chinnapannai handles the land and farm with his son Sengodan, and together they siphon off part of the family fortune, widening the generational split that will later fuel the drama.
Rasukutty’s gaze falls on Rukmani, a beauty captured in a studio photograph. Curious to learn more, his companion Sembuli launches a newspaper ad under the name Soona Baana to locate her, claiming she has vanished and owes money. Rukmani, a qualified agriculture graduate, is incensed by the deceit and confronts Soona Baana herself. When Chinnapannai learns of this, he orders the villagers to rescue Soona Baana from Rukmani’s apparent interference.
Soona Baana’s men, intent on taking Rukmani hostage, meet their match in Rasukutty, who, disguised as a North Indian, fights them off and saves her. The trio—Rasukutty, Sembuli, and Rukmani—make their way back to her village, but the truth behind the newspaper ad comes to light and the intruders escape. Despite the rough start, Rasukutty and Rukmani grow closer and soon become engaged.
The engagement hits a snag when Rukmani discovers Rasukutty is illiterate. The revelation sparks a tense confrontation with Eswari, Rasukutty’s mother. In front of the villagers, Rukmani tears up the wedding invitation, humiliating Periyapannai in a public way. Rasukutty protests at Rukmani’s doorstep, determined to win her over. He gains the support of the villagers, but Rukmani hires goons to attack him. He fights them off, and gradually his love for her strengthens.
Periyapannai refuses to accept the match, citing the public humiliation, and Rasukutty resolves to marry the woman his father has chosen, Poovatha, who turns out to be mentally challenged. Rukmani pleads with Periyapannai to let Rasukutty marry her; he refuses. In a twist, Rukmani, aided by the police, undermines the wedding by accusing Periyapannai of demanding dowry. Humiliation deepens the rift, and Periyapannai blames Rasukutty for the setback. Eswari chooses to leave with Rasukutty rather than remain in the strained household.
Rukmani’s ultimatum—she may take her own life unless Eswari confirms her as Rasukutty’s wife—pushes the family toward action. Meanwhile, Chinnapannai and Sengodan sow discord, plotting to poison Poovatha and push Ammavasai (Chinnapannai’s younger son) into the inheritance scheme. They coerce Periyapannai into promising to adopt Ammavasai, ensuring the family’s hold on the land. Rasukutty, sensing the collapse of the household, manipulates Periyapannai into a brief rift, making him believe Eswari and Rasukutty are abandoning town. The emotional rift brings Periyapannai and Eswari back together.
False accusations spearheaded by Chinnapannai and Sengodan claim Rasukutty intends to kill Periyapannai and Ammavasai for their wealth, and Rasukutty is arrested. The schemers move to finish the patriarchs, but Ammavasai stands up to protect his uncle and aunt, and Rasukutty escapes custody to rescue his parents from the goons. The climax sees reconciliation and renewal: Rukmani apologizes to Periyapannai, Rasukutty welcomes Ammavasai as an adopted brother, and Ammavasai looks forward to marrying Poovatha, completing a complex, interwoven family saga where duty, love, and loyalty contend with ambition and deceit.
