The film opens with the arranged marriage of Regina and John in a church, a union chosen more to please their families than from romantic longing. After the vows, they inhabit the same apartment as quiet strangers, and the neighbors grow irritated by John’s nightly drunken returns, a deliberate habit aimed at testing Regina’s patience. To escape the tense home life, Regina seeks a transfer to Australia, hoping a change of scenery might ease the strain.
One night, Regina experiences fits. John rushes her to the hospital, where the doctors struggle to get basic details about Regina’s age and medical history. Later, when he apologizes to the doctor, he learns an important truth: a spouse’s health matters, even if he dislikes the person. Regina explains that she has had fits in the past, and this moment triggers a powerful flashback: her college days and the love of her life, Surya.
In the college arc, Regina falls for Surya, who works at the call center of a mobile company. Surya earns a place in airline cabin-crew training in the United States. They decide to tell their parents about their relationship, but Surya’s father objects, pushing them toward a secret marriage. On the day of the intended wedding, Surya does not appear at the registrar office. Regina’s father, James, consoles his daughter and accompanies Regina to Surya’s home, only to discover Surya has already left for the US. A few days later, Regina receives a call from Surya’s friend Iyappan, who reveals that Surya has supposedly committed suicide in the US. This revelation shatters Regina and triggers her first major fits.
Hearing this, John begins to see Regina in a new light, gaining a deeper respect for her. Yet Regina keeps him at a distance until a second major flashback is revealed by Sarathy, a friend who helps uncover a different heartbreak in John’s past. John had fallen for Keerthana, and they marry. The day after the wedding, Keerthana is hit by a car and dies in front of John, leaving him devastated and convinced that he can’t love again. Four years later, Sarathy helps him move on and encourages him to open his heart once more, which sets the stage for the events that begin the film.
Back in the present, Regina starts to respond to John’s quiet sincerity. They grow to like each other, but their feelings remain unspoken as they navigate the delicate balance between duty and desire. On John’s birthday, Regina gives him a gift and asks him to open it alone, but his fear that she is masking affection leads him to postpone the moment of truth.
Regina’s request to transfer to Australia is approved, and the moment comes for a final test of their true feelings. When she shares the news over a beer she once bought for him, John misreads the intention, thinking she is using the gesture to push toward divorce. In truth, she is trying to tell him that she wants to start a life together. He drives her to the airport, and as he prepares to leave, she phones to say she saw Surya at the emigration counter. He hurries to confront Surya, who explains that his departure was forced by his father and that his “suicide” was a ruse to help Regina move on. Surya further remarks that love sometimes means choosing to love the person you marry, not the one you once loved, and he glances at a ring he once wore, a symbol that the memory of their relationship will always linger.
Enraged, Regina slaps John and discards the unopened gift. When John finally opens the box, he finds the words “Let’s begin our new Life.” The revelation shifts everything: Regina and John recognize the depth of their shared feelings and decide to start a life together, free from fear and full of possibility. Their story closes on a note of renewed commitment, a quiet promise to chart a future side by side.
