Quicksilver 1986

“Smiling” Jack Casey is a young, ambitious floor trader on the Pacific Exchange whose risky bet wipes out both his company’s and his family’s savings. After this crushing loss, he withdraws from the high-stakes world of trading and embraces a simpler, more mobile life as a bicycle messenger. The fall from grace strains his relationships, as his parents and girlfriend struggle to understand his new path and the precarious choices he makes.

Among the colorful, close-knit crew of bike messengers, Casey finds a sense of camaraderie and purpose as he navigates a life with less security but more freedom. He and his colleagues face a dangerous edge when he crosses paths with a gang while trying to help a troubled young woman named Terri. Terri’s troubles pull Casey deeper into a web of risk, loyalty, and hard choices, testing his resolve and his sense of right and wrong.

Even as he basks in the freedom that his new profession offers, Casey uses his education and business acumen to lend a steadying hand to his coworkers. When some of them become entangled in dangerous or morally murky matters, he must decide whether to step in, a decision that pulls him into a sinister network of murder and intrigue.

In a bold turn, Casey returns to the floor for a day, buying shares of a plummeting penny stock and holding on until it recovers. That daring move helps restore his family’s fortune and also enables his bike-messenger friend, Hector, to realize his long-held dream of owning a hot dog stand. Terri faces danger once again as Gypsy, a drug dealer, stalks her, and Casey’s circle of riders comes to her aid.

In retaliation for Gypsy’s actions, Casey engages in an extended car-versus-bike chase that culminates with Gypsy driving off the edge of an unfinished highway. The story then jumps forward to a quieter future: Casey applying for “normal” jobs and Terri deciding to become a paramedic, while the pair end up buying hot dogs from Hector.
