Agnes is a tidy, dutiful middle-class suburban homemaker and mother to two grown sons, Ziggy and Gabe. She moves through her days beside her husband, Louie, in a rhythm that feels comfortable but narrow. After baking her own cake and hosting a birthday gathering, she finds herself drawn to a 1000-piece puzzle among the gifts, a simple object that suddenly promises something more. The puzzle speaks to her curiosity and her talent for solving problems, and it nudges her toward a trip to New York City to seek bigger, more intricate pieces.

At a bustling puzzle shop, she encounters an advertisement that introduces Robert, a former puzzle tournament champion who has become wealthy and reclusive after his wife—his former partner—left him. The contrast between her everyday practicality and his refined, unconventional approach to puzzles fascinates him, and he sees in her a partner who could help him win again. The two begin to test how well they work together, and he asks her to meet him twice a week to practice for the upcoming national championship.

Back home, Agnes tells a tale of helping an aunt who has a broken leg, a pretense she uses to disappear to tournaments and to hide the growing pull she feels toward Robert. She begins to redefine her own life, allowed by the memory of what she might become to step into a more assertive version of herself. Her loyalty to her family, especially her husband’s resistance, becomes a source of tension as she keeps her evolving relationship with Robert secret and allows herself to fall in love with him.

On the final day of practice, Agnes and Robert share a night together. The revelation shakes the family when she returns home late and Louie confronts her, asking if she’s having an affair. She admits to the affair with her puzzle partner, and the confession becomes a turning point. The next day they participate in the national tournament; with Ziggy cooking breakfast, the team wins the championship. Agnes reveals the news of her success to her sons but withholds the fact that she is about to depart for international competition in Brussels.

Later, the family—Ziggy, Gabe, and Gabe’s girlfriend Nicki—goes to the family’s old vacation home, where Louie has agreed to sell so the boys can pursue their dreams. Agnes reaches out to Robert, who reminds her of the trip to Brussels. In a decisive moment, she tells him she will not join the international tournament as planned. Instead, she boards a train to Montreal, choosing to chart her own course rather than follow the path laid out by others.
