Under the rule of her solemn father, the King, the young Princess Arete grows up in a lonely tower waiting for a suitor worthy of her. While the suitors complete treasure-collecting quests for the King, her awakening curiosity about the outside world grows with every passing day, and she begins to question the life she’s known.

One night, Arete stumbles upon a book that reveals the stories of the ancient Witch and other wizards, awakening a sense that there is a wider world beyond the castle walls. Her desire to see more is intensified when two eager suitors arrive, but she shows no interest in their displays of wealth and power. Instead, she quietly resolves to escape into the wider world, yet the guards intercept her attempt and she is brought before her father once more.

Just before Arete is led to the King, the monarch negotiates with the powerful sorcerer Boax about a potential betrothal. Although the King hesitates, he eventually yields after Boax casts a charm that convinces Arete to become a traditional princess and to accept his advances. Boax then takes the princess to his distant castle, where she learns a troubling truth: he does not love her and his purpose is to imprison her, driven by a prophecy that a princess named Arete could take away his eternal life.

Inside Boax’s castle, Arete finds one beam of light in the bleak surroundings—a sympathetic villager named Ample. Ample explains that Boax has arranged with the nearby town to provide water for their fields in exchange for feeding him, but she has begun digging her own well and dreams of true independence. Encouraged by Ample to tell a story, Arete slowly reclaims her spirit, breaking the enchantment Boax had placed on her and regaining her old sense of self.

Boax, still convinced that Arete is under some spell, releases her and assigns her a magical quest: to bring back a ruby from a golden eagle that resides in the distant northern mountains. Arete accepts the mission, but she returns to Boax’s castle in secret to uncover the source of his water magic. When Boax discovers her, a moment of panic leads him to destroy his own castle and unleash a flood across the land. In the chaos, his gem that grants him eternal life is lost, revealing that the prophecy was true after all.

With the town’s health restored, Arete chooses to leave and pursue a life among the people of the Earth. She journeys to the mountains to visit the golden eagle, and then travels further abroad to build a life with her hands, among ordinary people. The story closes on Boax, left to reflect, gazing at his own hands as he contemplates Arete’s words about the magic that lies in the hearts of people.
