Set shortly after German reunification, the film follows the disintegrating bond between Jockel, a political activist, and Stefan, a heroin addict, as they become involved with bisexual Micha. In parallel, Micha’s son Sascha, trapped in poverty and drugs, is fascinated by the eccentric puppeteer Firlefanz, whose grotesque marionettes enact a gay fairy‑tale mirroring Jockel and Stefan’s turmoil. Their downfall is steered by drug dealer Ingolf, who pulls their strings with heroin.
