Ponette, Victoire Thivisol, loses her mother in a car crash, a tragedy that leaves her with a broken arm and a cast that marks the opening of a difficult journey. The mother, Marie Trintignant is gone, and Ponette must begin to navigate life without her guiding presence.

Her father, Xavier Beauvois, steps away from supervising her care and entrusts Ponette to his sister, Claire Nebout (La Tante), while her cousins Matiaz and Delphine, Matiaz Bureau Caton and Delphine Schiltz, are part of the family circle. The group is eventually sent to a boarding school, where the loss of her mother becomes even more painful as she endures taunts on the playground for being motherless.

Unable to reconcile the absence, Ponette withdraws, spending days waiting for her mother to return. She teams up with Ada, Léopoldine Serre, a schoolfriend, to try to become a “child of God” in the hope of convincing God to bring her mother back; the plan proves fruitless.

In a quiet, final moment at the cemetery, the mother briefly appears to offer comfort and urge Ponette to live and find happiness with her father, acknowledging that she cannot keep returning. A subtle, intimate gesture lingers: the sweater the mother gives to Ponette, one she did not bring to the cemetery, becomes a remembered thread of connection. Later, her father remarks, I haven’t seen that sweater in a while.
