Mr Hedges, the somewhat naive and idealistic teacher of Class 5C at Fenn Street School, lobbies to have his class join the annual camping trip despite opposition from the head teacher Mr Cromwell, the fastidious and officious school caretaker Mr Potter, the snobbish teacher Miss Ewell, and the world-weary Mr Price. After a heartfelt speech about giving Class 5C a helping hand and the countryside’s benefits, the decision is made to let the trip go ahead on the condition that he accompanies the pupils to supervise.
On the camping trip, the teacher pursues Penny Wheeler, a local part-time barmaid, while the class settles into their usual activities: Dennis Dunstable relishes the open air and forms a friendship with a gypsy boy named Nobbler. The group from Class 5C also bumps heads with the stereotypical upper-class pupils from the posh Boulters School, fueling a rivalry that tests pride and loyalty on both sides. The conflict comes to a head when Sharon Eversleigh makes a false rape allegation, sending shockwaves through the trip. A separate incident of stolen money is resolved when the teacher chooses to trust his class to sort things out, underscoring the film’s message about responsibility and belief in young people.
At the final dance, the teacher finds himself unexpectedly drawn into the romantic advances of Miss Cutforth, contrary to his wishes, leaving the camping trip with a mix of awkward humor and lingering tensions, but also with a strengthened sense of what his students can achieve when they are trusted and supported.
