Spoilers ahead
In Bakersfield, Benny King is an overweight, self-conscious teen facing a dull, sun-scorched summer. His father, Carl, wants him to pick up a job at a hamburger joint to build a work ethic instead of endlessly lounging at home, dreaming and scribbling in a notebook. Benny begins the new job with reluctance, but the lure of daydreams about Candace Williams—the girl he admires—remains strong, pulling his attention away from the grill and register.
