Peter Ibbetson 1935

Gogo is a young boy of English extraction growing up in Paris, where he shares a friendly but often combative bond with Mimsey. Their easygoing mischief and close proximity paint a vivid picture of childhood in a bustling, artistic city, setting the stage for a life that feels both playful and foreshadowed. After his mother dies, Gogo is taken to England by his uncle, who renames him after his mother’s maiden name, transforming Gogo into Peter Ibbetson.

Now an adult Englishman, Peter Ibbetson is an architect working in Yorkshire on a restoration project for the Duke of Towers, a nobleman with a stern presence and a history that will soon intersect with Peter’s own. Peter falls in love with Mary, Duchess of Towers, and she with him, though she is already married. When the duke discovers their affair, he demands explanations in a powerful, looming moment that tests Peter’s resolve. Peter soon realizes that Mary is his childhood sweetheart, a revelation that folds the past into the present in a way that paints their romance with both tenderness and peril. Mary has kept, in the dresser beside her bed, the dress she wore at their last childhood meeting, a tangible link to a love that refuses to fade.

The Duke becomes jealous and pulls a gun on Ibbetson. Ibbetson manages to kill the Duke in self-defense, and the weight of what has happened crashes down with iron gravity.

“So Death ended the second chapter. And then, in a prison on the bleak English moors…”

Ibbetson is unjustly convicted of murder, sentenced to life in prison, and he despares that he will never see Mary again. In a moment of desperate pain, he breaks his back during a fight with his guards and lies unconscious. Mary visits him in his dreams and convinces him that they can continue to live together in one another’s dreams, which connect them spiritually. Peter can leave prison to join Mary in sunlit glades and meadows, but only in his slumbers.

“…and so, many years went by.”

Though the years pass, Peter and Mary remain youthful in their dreams, a timeless corridor where their love endures beyond the confines of the world outside. Mary eventually dies of old age, but she goes to her usual dream rendezvous one last time and speaks to Peter from beyond. Peter, back on his bed in prison, promises to join her now, and dies, closing the loop of a life told in two realms—one of waking duty and another of dream-visited devotion.
