Perfect Number 2012

Kim Seok-go showed a lot of promise as a brilliant mathematician when he was in school, dedicating himself to numbers and theories rather than friendships. Now in his 30s, he’s an ordinary high school math teacher, a far cry from the bright future his youth promised. Seok-go is solemn and introverted, and his morning exchanges with Hwa-sun, the cafe employee he buys lunch from, are the brightest part of his day. When Hwa-sun’s ex-husband mercilessly beats her and her niece, she kills him. Seok-go overhears the fight from his house next door and decides to cover up the killing, determined to protect her from the police. He uses his genius to meticulously plan the perfect alibi for her, and thanks to his careful work, Hwa-sun is cleared in the case.

However, the detective in charge, Jo Min-beom, believes that Hwa-sun is guilty and follows his intuition despite the lack of evidence. Jo Min-beom also happens to have gone to the same high school as Seok-go, and when he finds out that his old school friend lives next door to the prime suspect, he starts digging deeper into Seok-go’s life. The tension between loyalty and justice threads through the story as Seok-go’s quiet intellect becomes both a shield and a potential liability, reshaping the characters’ sense of trust and danger. Through restrained pacing and close-up observations, the film invites viewers to weigh the costs of protecting someone you care about against the unraveling trail of clues that cling to your past. The unfolding dynamic between the brilliant, isolated mathematician and the dogged detective—who share a history—drives a quiet, moral puzzle that looks at friendship, guilt, and the consequences of choices made in fear.
