Perfect Body 1997

Andie Bradley, Amy Jo Johnson is a dedicated gymnast with the dream of competing in the Olympics. When offered the chance to train with one of the United States’ leading coaches, she leaves Portland for Seattle to chase that goal and embraces the opportunity with gratitude.

At her first session, the coach questions her weight and the pressure to lose pounds grows quickly. She starts with a modest, sensible plan, but that foundation soon collapses into a harsh, extreme calorie restriction as the emphasis on weight tightens.

While adjusting to the demanding regimen, she becomes close with Leslie Reynolds, Tara Boger, a fellow team member who hints that there are ways around the pressure and nudges her toward dangerous habits. Leslie tells her that there are paths to manage the load, and she urges self-induced vomiting, saying, > You can eat what you want, and not gain a pound. Andie continues the restrictive pattern, but when a bout of intense hunger hits, she turns to purging to cope.

Her mom notices changes in her weight, and her boyfriend and best friend start to detect shifts in her attitude and behavior. Andie eventually confides in her best friend that she sees the changes and cannot stop the problematic cycle.

She faints twice during competitions and is taken to the hospital after the second collapse. A doctor speaks candidly with her parents about her health risks, and they decide that she and her mother should move back home. Refusing to give up on training, Andie runs away to the gym, where she sees a new girl being given the same weight-focused lecture she once endured.

Back in Portland, she joins a support group that encourages her to eat as part of therapy, beginning the slow work toward a healthier relationship with food and her sport. The journey toward healing is gradual, but the film closes with Andie walking into the school gymnasium and stepping back onto the balance beam, signaling a cautious, hopeful return to her passion while prioritizing her well-being.
