Pension Mimosas 1935

In 1924, on the Côte d’Azur, Louise Noblet, Françoise Rosay, runs a small hotel, Pension Mimosas, with her husband Gaston Noblet, André Alerme, who also acts as a supervisor at the local casino. Their clientele are mostly unlucky gamblers hoping for a breakthrough at the casino, and though they are childless, Louise and Gaston have raised the young Pierre Brabant, Paul Bernard, while his father serves a prison sentence. Their quiet arrangement is upended when the father is released early and comes to reclaim his son, forcing a uneasy reconfiguration of their familiar home.

By 1934, Pierre Brabant is a young man living in Paris among gamblers and gangsters, and he still plays on the feelings of his former adoptive parents to extract money from them. Louise makes him return to Pension Mimosas and find a job, but she also develops an ambiguous affection for him. To please him, she even invites his mistress, Nelly, Lise Delamare, to join him at the hotel. The two women quickly become rivals, while Pierre accumulates debts. Louise proceeds with calculated caution, using the situation to shield her own interests, yet the tension between care and manipulation grows more volatile with every passing day.

Louise eventually reveals Nelly’s whereabouts to her old protector, who comes to take Nelly back, a move that unsettles Pierre and shifts the power dynamics within Pension Mimosas. In despair, Pierre kills himself, and Louise steps out under an assumed identity to gamble on the casino floor, determined to win the money needed to pay his debts and restore a precarious balance she had tried to preserve.
