In the sun-drenched world of Beverly Hills, Richard Kennerly Richard Crenna is a successful businessman who seems to have it all: a stylish wife, Catherine Kennerly Joanne Woodward, and a bright daughter, Beth Heather Langenkamp. Behind that polished surface, however, he keeps a long-running secret: an affair with the artist Nina Simon Lindsay Wagner that has continued for eight years, and a six-year-old son, Eric R.J. Williams. To sustain the ruse, Richard has arranged for Nina and their son to live in a beachside Malibu home, while he presents a conventional life to Catherine and Beth. Catherine remains unaware of the true nature of her husband’s relationship, while Nina accepts the arrangement, choosing to continue the affair as part of a precarious balance.
Beth explains to Richard that she wants to move out with her boyfriend, signaling trouble beneath the surface. Soon after, Richard falls gravely ill and dies, exposing the double life he led. Catherine’s world shatters as she uncovers the affair and learns about Nina and Eric. The two women, initially at odds, begin to clash—Catherine resists Nina’s role in their lives, while Nina fights for her son’s future—and they even engage in a fist fight at Richard’s funeral. Yet, as the truth emerges, the two women realize they were both manipulated by Richard and, despite the anger, they settle their differences and move forward with a renewed sense of perspective.
