Willard Young (Elijah Wood) is a 10-year-old on a scholarship at a private school, but fear shadows him and he is afraid of almost everything around him. He hasn’t seen his father for years, convinced he’s away on sea duty. His mother sends him to a small, quiet town, where he stays with Lily Reed (Melanie Griffith) and her husband Ben Reed (Don Johnson).

In this unfamiliar place, Willard meets Billie Pike (Thora Birch), a 9-year-old tomboy who doesn’t know who her father is and whose mother struggles to keep up with life. The two children form a deep, uncomplicated friendship—something neither of them has truly experienced before.

As their bond grows, Ben and Lily begin to confront the remnants of a long-ago tragedy: the death of their infant son, an event that has left Lily mired in grief and guilt and has tested Ben’s patience and love. Willard’s presence slowly helps them reach toward each other again, offering a chance to mend what has been broken.

Meanwhile, Willard also begins to face his own fears and the painful truth about his family. He learns that his father was not on sea duty after all, but had left his mother for another woman, a revelation that unsettles him and reshapes his understanding of home.

Billie, seeking closure of her own longing, tries to reach out to a skating-ring teacher she believes might be her father, only to be met with rejection. The heartbreak is real, and Billie must ultimately learn to live with the absence of a father in her life.

In the end, the question remains whether any of them can accept what they have, what they never had, and what redemption might look like. Through the slow, patient growth of trust, love, and forgiveness, they edge toward a fragile hope—toward a kind of salvation they call Paradise.
