George Plimpton, a writer for Sports Illustrated, pursues a Walter Mitty-like dream by sampling life as a professional athlete—whether he pitches in an exhibition game against All-Star baseball players or boxes a round with Sugar Ray Robinson—and then writes about the experience in vivid, thoughtful detail.

During a game of touch football, his editor suggests that Plimpton should try joining a professional football team’s training camp as a player, and the Detroit Lions agree to host him. What follows is a tentative, revealing boot camp where the line between amateur and professional quickly becomes clear.

Plimpton attempts to mask his total amateur status, but the Lions’ players see through him. Some resent the intrusion, yet Alex Karras intervenes on his behalf, offering a bridge between the curious writer and a team that wants to win more than it wants to prove a point.

In practice, Plimpton endures knocks and missteps, but he remains good-natured and sparely complains, earning the respect of many teammates who appreciate his sportsmanship despite the chaos of his attempt. There’s a brief moment of personal pride when he scores a touchdown in practice, only to be met with crackling laughter from the sideline as the others realize how little control he truly has.

With a relatively meaningless pre-season exhibition against the St. Louis Cardinals looming, the Lions’ head coach, Joe Schmidt, decides to let George run a single series of downs at quarterback. The decision is a practical experiment, not a triumph, and George finds himself sacked for losses, doing little right, and even colliding with a goal post, knocking himself senseless for a moment.

The film chooses to showcase footage from that September 8, 1967, preseason game between the Lions and Cardinals, weaving it into the narrative to give viewers a real sense of the on-field chaos and the heat of the moment.
