The film opens in a documentary-style sequence at an elementary school in Siligo, where six-year-old Gavino sits among classmates as a strict peasant father, Padre, bursts in and declares that Gavino must quit school to tend to the family sheep. Under his father’s watchful eye and subjected to his harsh discipline, Gavino spends the next fourteen years tending sheep on the rugged Sardinian slopes, gradually discovering things for himself and beginning to rebel against the life and expectations forced upon him.
From the daily grind of the flocks to the limits of his world, Gavino’s mind starts to push against the walls of rural life. He absorbs sounds, stories, and a growing awareness of language, space, and possibility as he endures the isolation of the mountains.
Rescued from lifelong isolation when he is called for military service, Gavino experiences a new chapter: in the army he learns electronics, the Italian language, and classical music, while still yearning for a university education that seems out of reach.
Returning home, he tells his father that he will attend university. They clash in a bitter confrontation, but Gavino ultimately enrolls and excels as a student, evolving into a linguist who studies the origins of the Sardinian language.
The film ends in the same documentary vein as Gavino Ledda himself—Gavino Ledda—explaining why he wrote his book and what Sardinian children may expect as inhabitants of a rural area with close ties to the land.
