Jason St. Julian, a talented yet troubled DJ with a gambling problem, wakes up to trouble when debt collectors break into his apartment and give him a week to repay what he owes.
During a late-night underground party, Crash and Nut crash the scene to collect the debt, forcing Jason to scramble for a way out. The tension escalates as he runs into Danny Simon and his girlfriend Monica Collins; Danny tries to recruit him to DJ at his club, but Jason refuses because Danny was responsible for sending him to jail.
Moments later, the police break up the party and Jason is arrested. In interrogation, Det. Caldwell, a crooked cop, uses this leverage to force him into DJing for Danny. At the club, Jason begins to flirt with Monica, and Danny warns him to stay away. Undeterred, the two lovers hatch a plan to steal $400,000 from Danny by staging a robbery and making it look legitimate.
While holding the money, Jason meets Monica at a motel and they celebrate with champagne, tossing the cash in the air and making love. But their happiness is short-lived: Monica takes the money and travels to Cancun, and Caldwell berates Jason for letting her go, insisting he get the money back or face consequences. As Jason hunts for Monica, tragedy hits when Danny kills Monica’s sister. To help, Jason’s friend Frank offers to go to Jason’s apartment to recover the stash, but Frank is beaten and hospitalized in the process.
Jason eventually tracks Monica to Cancun, follows her to her hotel room, and retrieves the money while she’s in the shower. When she emerges, Monica pulls a gun, but Jason disarms her; in a tense moment, she tries to shoot, yet fails, and Jason reveals that Danny killed her sister. The pursuit culminates back at Danny’s office/club, where Shorty pulls a gun and Caldwell arrives, claiming a bigger stake in the money. A deadly shootout erupts, leaving Danny and Shorty dead while Caldwell is wounded and forces Jason to walk back to the club at gunpoint. In a climactic moment, a video is played in the club showing Caldwell’s role in the killings, and the police arrive to arrest him.
In the end, Jason has paid off his debt, and Crash and Nut explain that their actions were “just business.” Nut adds a reminder that “playoffs are starting,” a line Jason quietly declines, while Crash warns that others will wonder where he got his money. Jason then speaks with Quincy, who cautions him to be careful as he heads back toward New York, and the film closes on his drive away from the city.
